Symmetrization/antisymmetrization of tensor resistivity measurements and data rotation technique enable separation of the formation response from the tool eccentricity effect in the borehole. Similar principles of data processing can be applied to tensor measurements acquired by both wireline and logging-while-drilling tools of the new generation. I show how to directly determine the bed boundary positions and the formation anisotropy azimuth and how to perform visual interpretation of raw tool data in the presence of the tool eccentricity. I study the tool behavior in conductive water-based mud boreholes — the situation that requires much more complicated numerical modeling than the case of resistive oil-based mud boreholes. I show when and how the tool eccentricity effect can be separated from the formation response. The separation technique can accelerate and improve existing methods of formation interpretation.

Separation of azimuthal effects for new-generation resistivity logging tools — Part I

A method for imaging a geologic deposit using data collected from a borehole includes: selecting an instrument for performing electromagnetic (EM) measurements, the instrument including at least one transmitter and at least one orthogonally oriented receiver; obtaining EM measurement data from the borehole with the instrument; transforming the EM measurement data to acoustic data; and estimating at least one of a direction and a distance from the instrument to the deposit from the data. A computer program product and a system are provided.

Method and apparatus for imaging bed boundaries using azimuthal propagation resistivity measurements

Electromagnetic (EM) logging is an im-portant method of formation evaluation because of its sensitivity to resistivity, which is a function of fluid saturation and fluid properties. Conventional induction and propagation resistivity logging tools excite the geological formation by axial magnetic dipole transmitter(s). Axial re-ceivers measure the formation response, reflecting the medium resistivity. Such axial measurement has no azimuthal sensitivity and is insensitive to the anisotropy and many other details of the formation.

Summary A new azimuthal propagation resistivity (APR) measurement while drilling is being introduced for reservoir navigation and formation evaluation. This paper investigates the response of the new measurement to a dipping bed. Modeling results show that a change in the dipping angle will influence both the signal strength and the response pattern. The APR response at any relative dipping angle other than 90 degrees has both lower signal strength and a more complex response pattern. The response must be well understood to interpret the APR data collected in deviated and sub-horizontal wells. An inversion method has been developed to process the APR and standard propagation resistivity measurements for the distance to a bed. The field data examples have shown that the distance to a bed is best calculated if the shoulder bed resistivity is assumed as a priori information.

Summary Traditionally, measurement-while-drilling (MWD) data are used primarily for geosteering purposes and drilling decisions such as monitoring of hole direction, deviation, and delineation of abnormally pressured zones. Wireline resistivity measurements, galvanic and induction, play a fundamental role in identifying and delineating oil- and gas-bearing formations. The availability of both MWD and wireline data not only provides the interpreter with abundant information about subsurface formations but also poses a new challenge to generate a unique model(s) that better explains both data sets. Generally, MWD and wireline data are interpreted independently to estimate formation resistivities that may result in inconsistent earth models. In this study, we performed a joint inversion of MWD Multiple propagation resistivity (MPR), and wireline High Definition Induction log (HDIL) data to come up with an earth model that best explains bot the data sets. An inversion strategy using a dual earth model, that describes the appropriate logging conditions of both wireline and MWD was also used in theinversion. Finally, the proposed algorithm was implemented on synthetic and the Gulf of Mexico data examples, and the results were compared with conventional MPR and HDIL processing results.
