Hypoxia alters gene expression in human neuroblastoma cells toward an immature and neural crest-like phenotype
Annika Jögi,Ingrid Øra,Helén Nilsson,Åsa Lindeheim,Yuichi Makino,Lorenz Poellinger,Håkan Axelson,Sven Påhlman +7 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest a novel mechanism for selection of highly malignant tumor cells with stem-cell characteristics, and hypoxia apparently causes dedifferentiation both in vitro and in vivo.

Hypoxia-induced dedifferentiation of tumor cells--a mechanism behind heterogeneity and aggressiveness of solid tumors.
TL;DR: As low stage of differentiation in neuroblastoma and in breast cancer is linked to poor prognosis, hypoxia-induced dedifferentiation will not only contribute to tumor heterogeneity but could also be one mechanism behind increased aggressiveness of hypoxic tumors.

The miR-17-92 MicroRNA Cluster Regulates Multiple Components of the TGF-β Pathway in Neuroblastoma
Pieter Mestdagh,Anna-Karin Boström,Francis Impens,Erik Fredlund,Erik Fredlund,Gert Van Peer,Pasqualino De Antonellis,Kristoffer von Stedingk,Bart Ghesquière,Stefanie Schulte,Michael Dews,Andrei Thomas-Tikhonenko,Johannes H. Schulte,Massimo Zollo,Alexander Schramm,Kris Gevaert,Håkan Axelson,Franki Speleman,Jo Vandesompele +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the miR-17-92 microRNA cluster is often activated in cancer cells, but the identity of its targets remains elusive, and the effects of activation of the microRNA clusters on global protein expression in neuroblastoma (NB) cells are examined.

Direct regulation of GAS6/AXL signaling by HIF promotes renal metastasis through SRC and MET.
Erinn B. Rankin,Katherine Fuh,Laura Castellini,Kartik Viswanathan,Elizabeth C. Finger,Anh N. Diep,Edward L. LaGory,Mihalis Kariolis,Andy Chan,David Lindgren,Håkan Axelson,Yu Rebecca Miao,Adam J. Krieg,Amato J. Giaccia +13 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that inactivation of growth arrest-specific 6 (GAS6)/AXL signaling using a soluble AXL decoy receptor reversed the invasive and metastatic phenotype of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cells.

Association of erythroid transcription factors: complexes involving the LIM protein RBTN2 and the zinc-finger protein GATA1.
TL;DR: A molecular link exists between three proteins crucial for erythropoiesis, and the data suggest that variations in amounts of complexes involving RBTN2, TAL1, and GATA1 could be important for ERYthroid differentiation.
