MESSENGER X-ray observations of magnetosphere–surface interaction on the nightside of Mercury
Simon Lindsay,Matthew K. James,Emma J. Bunce,Suzanne M. Imber,Suzanne M. Imber,Haje Korth,Adrian Martindale,Tim K. Yeoman +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the locations of the majority of X-ray fluorescence events are ordered in two clear latitudinal bands on the dawn side of the planet centred at ~50°N and ~20°S.
Solar wind alpha particles and heavy ions in the inner heliosphere observed with MESSENGER
Daniel J. Gershman,Thomas H. Zurbuchen,Lennard A. Fisk,Jason A. Gilbert,Jim M. Raines,Brian J. Anderson,Charles W. Smith,Haje Korth,Sean C. Solomon,Sean C. Solomon +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a data analysis technique has been developed that recovers both bulk and thermal speeds to 10% accuracy and provides the first measurements of solar wind heavy ions (mass per charge > 2 amu/e) at heliocentric distances within 0.5 AU.
Structure and dynamics of Mercury's magnetospheric cusp: MESSENGER measurements of protons and planetary ions
Jim M. Raines,Daniel J. Gershman,Daniel J. Gershman,James A. Slavin,Thomas H. Zurbuchen,Haje Korth,Brian J. Anderson,Sean C. Solomon,Sean C. Solomon +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors found that high-energy Na+-group ions in the cusp are likely formed by ionization of escaping neutral Na in the outer dayside magnetosphere and the magnetosheath followed by acceleration and transport into the cus by reconnection at the subsolar magnetopause.
MESSENGER observations of a flux‐transfer‐event shower at Mercury
James A. Slavin,Suzanne M. Imber,Suzanne M. Imber,Scott A. Boardsen,Scott A. Boardsen,Gina A. DiBraccio,Torbjörn Sundberg,Menelaos Sarantos,Menelaos Sarantos,Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla,Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla,Adam Szabo,Brian J. Anderson,Haje Korth,Thomas H. Zurbuchen,Jim M. Raines,Catherine L. Johnson,Catherine L. Johnson,Reka M. Winslow,Rosemary M. Killen,Ralph L. McNutt,Sean C. Solomon,Sean C. Solomon +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of MESSENGER magnetic field observations taken in the southern lobe of Mercury's magnetotail and the adjacent magnetosheath on 11 April 2011 indicates that a total of 163 flux transfer events (FTEs) occurred within a 25min interval.
