A review of the mechanical properties and durability of basalt fiber-reinforced concrete

The application of vegetable fibers has gained great notoriety as a building material, due to its availability, mechanical properties and low cost. In this sense, the objective of this work is to carry out a bibliographic review on the application of this fibers in cementitious matrices, including concrete and mortar. This work analyzes the main characteristics of natural vegetable fibers that affect the properties of composites, such as geometric, physical, mechanical and chemical properties. The characteristics of the alkaline treatments carried out on the fibers are highlighted to improve the adhesion properties, durability, water absorption and tensile strength. Some case studies were analyzed in detail: coconut, bamboo and bananas fibers, all in combination with cementitious matrices. Finally, some suggestions for future work are highlighted, showing the need for further studies on the application of natural fibers in cementitious composites.

Use of natural vegetable fibers in cementitious composites: concepts and applications

Basalt fiber is a natural mineral fiber that offers environmental protection and favorable mechanical properties. It is in fact a silicate material, which is highly compatible with cement-based materials, and is widely used to enhance the performance of concrete. This paper provides a review of the latest research progress on basalt fiber-reinforced concrete (BFRC) and an analysis of the effect of basalt fiber on the properties and microstructure of BFRC. Studies show that the flexural strength, crack resistance, and frost resistance of concrete are significantly improved by basalt fiber, whereas the effect of basalt fiber on compressive strength and impermeability remains ambiguous. The reinforcement effect of basalt fiber on the properties of BFRC primarily depends on its length and content, and the optimal parameters of basalt fiber are affected by the raw materials and evaluation methods used. The addition of basalt fiber increases the porosity of concrete, although a consensus regarding the pore size distribution of BFRC has not been attained. Finally, future research trends in BFRC are discussed.

Effect of fly ash on mechanical properties and microstructure of cellulose fiber-reinforced concrete under sulfate dry–wet cycle attack

Nowadays, the substitution of the traditional reinforcements of cement-based composite materials by natural fibres is more and more common However, some problems remain, mostly because the addition of natural fibres to cement can delay its hydration due to the high concentration of polysaccharide in the fibres’ leachates Many studies have shown the effectiveness of alkaline treatments in order to improve the natural fibre/cement compatibility but the mechanical compatibility, ie the bonding strength between the cement and the fibres has never been characterized Therefore, this study aims to fully understand the natural fibre/cement interface Oil palm fibre is chosen as reference fibre because of its very low compatibility with cement NaOH treatments and superplasticizer are used, in order to modify the surface of the fibre and the viscosity of the matrix Both chemical and mechanical compatibilities are characterized, by various methods such as isothermal calorimetry, FTIR, tensile tests on single fibres and pull-out tests Results show that alkali-treatments are very effective since it can improve both compatibilities, while a more fluid matrix allows to further enhance the properties of the interface, by limiting the amount of sugar at the fibre’s surface without hindering the cement hydration

Study of modifications on the chemical and mechanical compatibility between cement matrix and oil palm fibres

The inclusion of fibers in concrete slabs improves the concrete’s mechanical properties. In this work, the mechanical properties of cellulose fiber (CF)-reinforced concrete (CFRC) with four fiber contents (0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 kg/cm3) are determined for application at the Nazixia Hydropower Station. The mix design ratio of plain concrete (PC) is 1:0.47:2.74:5.09 (cement:water:sand:aggregate), with a water–cement ratio of 0.47. Some parameters of the CFRC, including strength, energy absorption capacity, and toughness, are compared and analyzed through mechanical tests. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths of the CFRC are higher than those of PC, especially the concrete with 0.9 kg/m3 fiber content. The concrete with the best fiber content in the test (0.9 kg/cm3) is applied to the Nazixia face slab. In addition, the service period of the dam face slab is monitored, and changes in the temperature, stress, and strain of the CFRC face slab are analyzed from July 2013 to January 2018. Results show that adding CF to the face slab concrete improves the performance of the face slab concrete by enabling it to maintain a stable working state in cold climates and during earthquakes. Thus, CFRC is suitable for concrete slabs in extreme environments.
