4D printing of shape memory polymer composites: A review on fabrication techniques, applications, and future perspectives

4D bioprinting is the next-generation additive manufacturing-based fabrication platform employed to construct intricate, adaptive, and dynamic soft and hard tissue structures as well as biomedical devices. It is achieved by using stimuli-responsive materials, especially shape memory polymers (SMPs) and hydrogels, which possess desirable biomechanical characteristics. In the last few years, numerous efforts have been made by 4D printing community to develop novel stimuli-responsive polymeric materials by considering their biomedical perspective. This review presents an up-to-date overview of 4D bioprinting technology incorporating bioprinting materials, functionalities of biomaterials as well as the focused approach towards different tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM) applications. It includes bone, cardiac, neural, cartilage, drug delivery systems, and other high-value biomedical devices. This review also addresses current limitations and challenges in 4D bioprinting technology to provide a basis for foreseeable advancements for TERM applications that could be helpful for their successful utilization in clinical settings. • A compendium review of 4D bioprinting technology. • Development of scaffolds for tissue regeneration through 4D bioprinting. • Fabrication of biomedical devices by stimuli-responsive polymers and hydrogels. • Addressing current limitations and challenges in 4D bioprinting. 

4D bioprinting of smart polymers for biomedical applications: recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

The idea of four-dimensional (4D) printing is the formation of intricate stimuli-responsive 3D architectures that transform into different forms and shapes upon exposure to environmental stimuli. 4D printing (4DP) of smart/intelligent materials is a promising and novel approach to generate intricate structures for biomedical, food, electronics, textile, and agricultural fields. Nowadays, soft robotics is a growing research field focusing on developing micro/nanoscale 4D-printed robots using intelligent materials. Herein, recent advancements in 4DP of soft robotics, actuators, and grippers are summarized. This review also highlights some recent developments in novel robotics technologies and materials including multi-material printing, electro-, and magneto-active soft materials (MASMs), and metamaterials. It also sheds light on different modeling mechanisms including numerical models and machine learning (ML) models for fabricating highly precise and efficient micro/macro-scaled robots. The applications of shape-memory polymers (SMPs), hydrogels, and liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs)-based 4D-printed soft and intelligent robots in different engineering fields are highlighted. Lastly, this review incorporates current challenges which are hindering the actual utilization of 4D-printed soft robotics and their possible remedies. 

4D printing: Technological developments in robotics applications

Stimuli‐responsive polymers (SRPs) are special types of soft materials, which have been extensively used for developing flexible actuators, soft robots, wearable devices, sensors, self‐expanding structures, and biomedical devices, thanks to their ability to change their shapes and functional properties in response to external stimuli including light, humidity, heat, pH, electric field, solvent, and magnetic field or combinations of two or more of these stimuli. In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) aka 3D printing technology of these SRPs, also known as 4D printing, has gained phenomenal attention in different engineering fields, thanks to its unique ability to develop complex, personalized, and innovative structures, which undergo twisting, elongating, swelling, rolling, shrinking, bending, spiraling, and other complex morphological transformations. Herein, an effort has been made to provide insightful information about the AM techniques, type of SRPs, and their applications including, but not limited to tissue engineering, soft robots, bionics, actuators, sensors, construction, and smart textiles. This article also incorporates the current challenges and prospects, hoping to provide an insightful basis for the utilization of this technology in different engineering fields. It is expected that the amalgamation of 3D printing with SRPs would provide unparalleled advantages in different engineering arenas. 

Recent advances in the additive manufacturing of stimuli‐responsive soft polymers

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have gained significant attraction from both industrial and academic sectors, thanks to their biodegradability, non-toxicity, and renewability with remarkable mechanical characteristics. Desirable mechanical characteristics of CNCs include high stiffness, high strength, excellent flexibility, and large surface-to-volume ratio. Additionally, the mechanical properties of CNCs can be tailored through chemical modifications for high-end applications including tissue engineering, actuating, and biomedical. Modern manufacturing methods including 3D/4D printing are highly advantageous for developing sophisticated and intricate geometries. This review highlights the major developments of additive manufactured CNCs, which promote sustainable solutions across a wide range of applications. Additionally, this contribution also presents current challenges and future research directions of CNC-based composites developed through 3D/4D printing techniques for myriad engineering sectors including tissue engineering, wound healing, wearable electronics, robotics, and anti-counterfeiting applications. Overall, this review will greatly help research scientists from chemistry, materials, biomedicine, and other disciplines to comprehend the underlying principles, mechanical properties, and applications of additively manufactured CNC-based structures.

Gas drainage in Jincheng Mining Group Co., Ltd. was introduced briefly and the importance of gas drainage in gas control was analyzed. Combined with coal-bed gas occurrence and gas emission, the double system of gas drainage was optimized and a progressive gas drainage model was experimented on. For guaranteed drainage, excavation and mining and realization of safety production and reasonable exploitation of gas in coal seams, many drainage methods were adopted to solve the gas problem of the working face.
