Cross-Cultural Validation of the Career Calling Scale for Korean Emerging Adults:

Firefighters are exposed to complex stresses resulting from life-threatening risks in the work environment, expanding scope of work, insufficient compensation and support. This study investigated the role of vocational calling in job stress leading to burnout, which impairs mental health and organizational effectiveness. One hundred and ninety-one firefighters (average age, 40.97 years; average career, 13.14 years) participated in the study. Firefighters with a high sense of calling showed lower burnout at both low and high stresses than those with a low sense of calling. In the group with low sense of calling, burnout increased more rapidly as the stress level increased than in the group with high sense of calling. As a psychological resource, sense of calling, which leads to the perception of one’s work as meaningful and purposeful, showed a moderating effect that buffers the effect of stress on burnout.

Moderating Effect of Vocational Calling on Firefighters’ Stress and Burnout

Purpose: Post-traumatic growth in police officers is important. This study was performed to determine the impact of emotional intelligence and vocational calling on post-traumatic growth. Methods: For this descriptive correlation study, participants were 184 police officers, working in one of eleven police stations. Data were collected from February 15 to February 28, 2017 using self-report questionnaires. Analysis was done using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with IBM SPSS 19.0. Results: Emotional intelligence and vocational calling were positively correlated with post traumatic growth. Analysis of the impact of emotional intelligence and vocational calling on post-traumatic growth showed that emotional intelligence was the most significant predictor variable. Moreover, there was a mediating effect of vocational calling in the relationship between emotional intelligence and post-traumatic growth. Conclusion: The study results suggest that improvement in police officer''s emotional intelligence and vocational calling increases their post-traumatic growth. It is necessary to device strategies which strengthen emotional intelligence and vocational calling in order to improve the post-traumatic growth of police officers.

Impact of Emotional Intelligence and Vocational Calling on Post-traumatic Growth in Police Officers

Background and objective: This study examines the effect of gardening activity level, plant preference, and key variables of police officers on resilience.Methods: A total of 105 male and female respondents with an average age of 40.6 ± 9.3 were surveyed and analyzed.Results: Respondents with older age, higher education, higher average monthly income, and longer period of service tended to show higher means of gardening activity level. Among the three factors of resilience (control, sociability, and positivity), control was higher in the graduate school group than other groups, showing statistical significance. Tulipa spp. and Narcissus spp. showed the highest preferences among the 8 cultivars of flowering plants, followed by Iris spp., Dahlia spp., Allium giantium, Eustoma grandiflourm, Zantedeschia spp. > Lilium Oriental Hybrids. And, as a result of examining the preferences for 6 plant colors, yellow and green were preferred the most, followed by white, blue, orange, and then red, showing statistical significance. The resilience of police officers showed a positive correlation with gardening activity level, multidimensional calling, job satisfaction, and plant preferences, and a negative correlation with stress level and job burnout, showing statistical significance. Regression analysis was conducted to determine the effect of gardening activity level, plant cultivar and color preference, multidimensional calling measure, job burnout, stress level, and demographic variables (control variables) on resilience. The results showed that job burnout had the greatest impact on resilience. The results of this study suggest that it will be possible to increase the resilience effect for police officers with severe trauma by using mostly yellow plants when forming gardens in the streets or the workplaces of police officers, and also by using Tulipa spp. for spring.Conclusion: The resilience effect of the natural environment through the application of plants to police officers with severe occupational trauma could improve the quality of life and relieve stress.

The Effect of Calling to Unsafe Driving Behavior: Mediation Effect of Professional Pride and Moderated Mediation Effect of Locus of Control

본 연구는 다차원적 소명척도를 한국어로 번안하여 척도의 신뢰도와 요인구성을 확인하고 타당도를 검증하고자 하였다. 먼저, 독일과 미국 직장인들을 대상으로 개발된 원척도를 번역과 역번역 과정을 거쳐 한국판 다차원적 소명척도(MCM-K) 문항을 완성하였고, 국내 다양한 기업에 종사하고 있는 직장인 385명을 대상으로 설문을 실시하였다. 수렴 및 변별 타당도 검증을 위해 내재적 동기 및 외재적 동기와의 관계를 살펴보았고, 공준 타당도 검증을 위해 기존 소명연구에서 사용되어 온 간편소명척도와 한국판 소명척도가 사용되었다. 소명의식의 선행변인과 결과변인들과의 관계를 살펴보기 위해 선행변인으로는 자율성을, 결과변인 중 업무 관련 변인으로는 경력몰입, 조직몰입, 조직 동일시 및 직무 탈진을, 삶 관련 변인으로는 삶의 의미와 삶 만족을 사용하였다. 확인적 요인분석 결과 원척도와 마찬가지로 3요인으로 구성된 다차원적 소명척도가 국내에서도 타당함이 확인되었다. 다차원적 소명척도는 외재적 동기보다 내재적 동기와 더 높은 상관을 보였고, 준거 타당도 검증을 위한 간편소명척도 및 한국형 소명척도와 모두 정적인 상관을 보였다. 선행변인 및 결과변인들과의 관계도 소명의식 관련 기존 연구들과 비슷한 결과를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 3요인으로 구성된 다차원적 소명척도가 한국에서 소명의식을 측정하고 연구하는데 적합한 척도임을 나타내는 것이다. 끝으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점, 그리고 추후 연구과제에 대해 논의하였다.

본 연구의 목적은 소명의식과 지속학습활동과의 관계를 목표지향성이 매개하고, 목표지향성이 지속학습활동에 영향을 미치는 경로에서 학습지원에 대한 개인의 인식이 이를 조절하는지 확인함으로써, 조절된 매개효과를 검증하는 것이다. 이를 위해 국내기업 임직원 200명(남 137명, 여 63명) 대상으로 직장 내에서 개인이 느끼는 소명의식과 목표지향성, 지속학습활동, 학습지원에 대한 인식에 대해 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 자료를 수집하고 SPSS 21.0와 SPSS Macro를 사용하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 변인들 간의 상관관계를 분석하여 소명의식, 학습목표지향성, 수행접근목표지향성, 지속학습활동 사이에 유의한 상관이 있음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 다중회귀분석으로 매개효과를 검증한 결과, 학습 및 수행접근목표지향성이 지속학습활동으로 소명의식에서 이어지는 부분을 정적으로 매개하고 있음을 확인하였다. 기존 가설에서 수행회피지향성이 부적으로 매개할 것이라고 가정하였으나 분석 결과는 유의미하지 않았다. 셋째, MODPROBE 분석 방법으로 학습지원인식의 조절 효과를 검증한 결과, 학습목표지향성과 수행접근목표지향성 두 요인 모두 지속학습활동에 영향을 미치는 경로에서 조절되는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 조절된 매개효과를 확인한 결과, 소명의식과 지속학습활동의 관계에서 학습 및 수행접근목표지향성이 이를 매개하며, 학습 및 수행접근목표지향성과 지속학습활동의 관계에서 학습지원인식이 조절하는 것으로 나타나 조절된 매개효과가 확인되었다. 마지막으로 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 학술적 시사점과 직무 영역에서의 시사점에 대해 논의하고, 나아가 후속 연구과제의 필요성에 대해 논의하였다.
