The nonlinear evolution of magnetized Keplerian shear ows is simulated in a local, three-dimensional model, including the eeects of compressibility and stratiication. Supersonic ows are initially generated by the Balbus-Hawley magnetic shear instability. The resulting ows regenerate a turbulent magnetic eld which, in turn, reinforces the turbulence. Thus, the system acts like a dynamo that generates its own turbulence. However, unlike usual dynamos, the magnetic energy exceeds the kinetic energy of the turbulence by a factor of 3{10. By assuming the eld to be vertical on the outer (upper and lower) surfaces we do not constrain the horizontal magnetic ux. Indeed, a large scale toroidal magnetic eld is generated, mostly in the form of toroidal ux tubes with lengths comparable to the toroidal extent of the box. This large scale eld is mainly of 1 even (i.e. quadrupolar) parity with respect to the midplane and changes direction on a timescale of about 30 orbits, in a possibly cyclic manner. The eeective Shakura-Sunyaev alpha viscosity parameter is between 0.001 and 0.005, and the contribution from the Maxwell stress is about 3-7 times larger than the contribution from the Reynolds stress.

Dynamo-generated Turbulence and Large-Scale Magnetic Fields in a Keplerian Shear Flow

This chapter details a series of dynamo models applicable to the sun and solar-type stars. After introducing the theoretical framework known as mean-field electrodynamics, a series of increasingly complex dynamo models are constructed, with the primary aim of reproducing the various basic observed characteristics of the solar magnetic activity cycle. Global and local magnetohydrodynamcial simulations of solar convection, and dynamo action therein, are also considered, and the resulting magnetic cycles compared and contrasted to those obtained in the simpler dynamo models. The focus throughout the chapter is on the sun, simply because the amount of available observational material on the solar magnetic field and its cycle dwarfs anything else in the astrophysical realm, in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, sensitivity, and time span.

The Sun's magnetic field is the engine and energy source driving all phenomena collectively defining solar activity, which in turn structures the whole heliosphere and significantly impacts Earth's atmosphere down at least to the stratosphere. The solar magnetic field is believed to originate through the action of a hydromagnetic dynamo process operating in the Sun's interior, where the strongly turbulent environment of the convection zone leads to flow-field interactions taking place on an extremely wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The Sun and other stars are magnetic: magnetism pervades their interiors and affects their evolution in a variety of ways In the Sun, both the fields themselves and their influence on other phenomena can be uncovered in exquisite detail, but these observations sample only a moment in a single star's life By turning to observations of other stars, and to theory and simulation, we may infer other aspects of the magnetism-eg, its dependence on stellar age, mass, or rotation rate-that would be invisible from close study of the Sun alone Here, we review observations and theory of magnetism in the Sun and other stars, with a partial focus on the "Solar-stellar connection": ie, ways in which studies of other stars have influenced our understanding of the Sun and vice versa We briefly review techniques by which magnetic fields can be measured (or their presence otherwise inferred) in stars, and then highlight some key observational findings uncovered by such measurements, focusing (in many cases) on those that offer particularly direct constraints on theories of how the fields are built and maintained We turn then to a discussion of how the fields arise in different objects: first, we summarize some essential elements of convection and dynamo theory, including a very brief discussion of mean-field theory and related concepts Next we turn to simulations of convection and magnetism in stellar interiors, highlighting both some peculiarities of field generation in different types of stars and some unifying physical processes that likely influence dynamo action in general We conclude with a brief summary of what we have learned, and a sampling of issues that remain uncertain or unsolved

Magnetism, dynamo action and the solar-stellar connection

The magnetic field of the Sun is the underlying cause of the many diverse phenomena combined under the heading of solar activity. Here we describe the magnetic field as it threads its way from the bottom of the convection zone, where it is built up by the solar dynamo, to the solar surface, where it manifests itself in the form of sunspots and faculae, and beyond into the outer solar atmosphere and, finally, into the heliosphere. On the way it transports energy from the surface and the subsurface layers into the solar corona, where it heats the gas and accelerates the solar wind.

The solar magnetic field

Dynamo waves, as solutions of the dynamo equations governing the solar cycle, propagate along isorotation surfaces inside the Sun. This theorem, universal in most dynamo models of the solar cycle, is proven analytically, and the nature of the propagation is analyzed. The effects of meridional circulation and the diffusion process on the propagation nature of the dynamo waves are estimated. The importance of this theorem is stressed for understanding the solar cycle and for inferring the rotational law of the interior of the Sun. (AIP)
