Automated crystal lattice orientation mapping using a computer-controlled SEM

The structure of PbS deposits condensed from the vapour in vacuo on to {001}, {110}, {111} and {443} rocksalt faces has been investigated by electron diffraction. The results suggest that the deposit atoms take up positions of least potential energy relative to the substrate, as far as is permitted by the disturbing effects of collisions of incident atoms with the initial deposit crystal nuclei, and by the limited surface mobility of the deposited atoms over the substrate. This view is also supported by the nature of the changes in crystal orientation which occur when initially random deposits are heated in vacuo.

Kikuchi Bands in Low-Energy Electron Diffraction

A new method for orientation determination has been developed. The orientation of crystals of a high symmetry (especially cubic crystals) can be determined immediately while working on the transmission electron microscope (TEM). For the application of the method the TEM must be equipped with a specimen-tilt goniometer. By tilting the specimen the angles of the stereographic projection are obtained from no more than two easily identified Kikuchi poles on the screen. The stereographic projection can be constructed from these angles. The indices of the crystal orientation direction (and any other lattice direction) can be calculated from the angles between this direction and the base vectors. These angles can be measured using a Wulff net in the stereographic projection of the transmitted crystal.



Eine neue Methode zur Orientierungsbestimmung wurde entwickelt. Die Orientierung von hochsymmetrischen Kristallen, insbesondere von Kristallen des kubischen Kristallsystems, kann unmittelbar wahrend der Arbeit am Transmissionselektronenmikroskop (TEM) bestimmt werden. Zur Anwendung der Methode mus das TEM mit einem Probengoniometer ausgerustet sein. Durch Drehung der Probe werden die Winkel der stereographischen Projektion von mindestens zwei leicht auf dem Leuchtschirm zu identifizierenden Kikuchipolen ermittelt und daraus die stereographische Projektion des durchstrahlten Kristalls konstruiert. Die Indizes der Kristallorientierungsrichtung und jeder anderen Gitterrichtung werden aus den Winkeln zwischen der gesuchten Richtung und den Basisvektoren berechnet. Diese Winkel werden mit einem Wulffschen Netz in der stereographischen Projektion des durchstrahlten Kristalls gemessen.

A direct method for orientation determination using TEM . I, Description of the method

Seven methods are described of indexing electron-diffraction Kikuchi-line patterns from single crystals for the purpose of practical applications of such patterns. The crystal lattice form and orientation can be determined by method 1 (see Part I), which also gives the indices of the diffractions relative to the chosen unit cell. The other six methods are in general only applicable in conjunction with a knowledge of the crystal lattice form and orientation, in which case any one of them, or more conveniently several in conjunction, can be used to index the lines.

The Interpretation and Application of Electron-Diffraction "Kikuchi-Line" Patterns - Part II. The Methods of Indexing the Patterns

The interpretation of electron-diffraction Kikuchi-line patterns from single crystals is developed as a powerful independent and general means of determining the crystal lattice type, dimensions and orientation and the Laue symmetry of the atomic arrangement. This aim is realized by a construction of the reciprocal lattice by methods which are described and illustrated. The satisfactory accuracy of the method is due to the relatively precise definitions for the location of the Bragg reflection positions, derived and stated here for the first time, which enable the method to be used even when the crystal lattice constants are large so that the bands are narrow and diffuse-edged, as with rhombic sulphur. The patterns shown also illustrate features of the line intensities, especially the reduction in intensity when the bands pass near the undeflected-beam spot.
