Summary
The soil is important in sequestering atmospheric CO2 and in emitting trace gases (e.g. CO2, CH4 and N2O) that are radiatively active and enhance the ‘greenhouse’ effect. Land use changes and predicted global warming, through their effects on net primary productivity, the plant community and soil conditions, may have important effects on the size of the organic matter pool in the soil and directly affect the atmospheric concentration of these trace gases.

A discrepancy of approximately 350 × 1015 g (or Pg) of C in two recent estimates of soil carbon reserves worldwide is evaluated using the geo-referenced database developed for the World Inventory of Soil Emission Potentials (WISE) project. This database holds 4353 soil profiles distributed globally which are considered to represent the soil units shown on a 1/2° latitude by 1/2° longitude version of the corrected and digitized 1:5 M FAO–UNESCO Soil Map of the World.

Total soil carbon pools for the entire land area of the world, excluding carbon held in the litter layer and charcoal, amounts to 2157–2293 Pg of C in the upper 100 cm. Soil organic carbon is estimated to be 684–724 Pg of C in the upper 30 cm, 1462–1548 Pg of C in the upper 100 cm, and 2376–2456 Pg of C in the upper 200 cm. Although deforestation, changes in land use and predicted climate change can alter the amount of organic carbon held in the superficial soil layers rapidly, this is less so for the soil carbonate carbon. An estimated 695–748 Pg of carbonate-C is held in the upper 100 cm of the world's soils. Mean C: N ratios of soil organic matter range from 9.9 for arid Yermosols to 25.8 for Histosols. Global amounts of soil nitrogen are estimated to be 133–140 Pg of N for the upper 100 cm. Possible changes in soil organic carbon and nitrogen dynamics caused by increased concentrations of atmospheric CO2 and the predicted associated rise in temperature are discussed.

In the coming decade, European dairy farms are obliged to realize a balance between phosphor (P) inputs to their farmland (in inorganic fertilizers and manure) and outputs (in crop products), the so-called P-equilibrium fertilization. The objective of the present study is to analyze the long-term effects of P-equilibrium fertilization on soil-P status (total soil-P and available soil-P), crop yield and P leaching on dry sandy soil, using data from experimental dairy farm 'De Marke', where P-equilibrium fertilization has been applied since 1989. For grassland, P availability is expressed in P-Al and for arable land in Pw. Total and available P status were monitored in the upper topsoil (layer 0-0.2 m). Total soil-P was also monitored in the lower topsoil (layer 0.2-0.4 m) and in the subsoil (0.4-0.6 m). From 1989 to 2006, Pw and P-Al (means of all farmland) decreased by 26 and 25%, respec- tively. In the same period, mean total-P content of the farmland decreased by 16%. There was a large variation in initial P status (1989) of the various plots. The rate of decline in all soil-P indicators was positively correlated to their initial values. In plots with the lowest initial values, P status did not change, while in plots with high initial values it tended to stabilize at lower levels. At equilibrium-P fertilization, Pw is estimated to stabilize at 20. This is lower than the recommended P status of Dutch soils used for maize cropping. P-Al is estimated to stabilize at 30-40, which corresponds to the current recommendations for grassland. The data show that at P-equilibrium fertil- ization, soil available-P status is higher in a maize-ley rotation than in permanent grassland. The decline in total P and available P did not affect crop yield, nor did it affect the P concentration in groundwater, but at 'De Marke', P emission to groundwater is generally low. The results obtained suggest that P-equilibrium fertilization can be compatible with efficient crop production.

P-equilibrium fertilization in an intensive dairy farming system: effects on soil-P status, crop yield and P leaching

Nutrient management at Dutch dairy farms is changing rapidly from strong reliance on external inputs to more prudent utilization of internal resources. This paper explores opportunities and constraints arising from this shift towards eco-technological management. A mathematical model of inorganic and organic nitrogen (N) flows in a dairy farming system was formulated based on ecological concepts, integrating processes of nutrient input, recycling, immobilization and mineralization. Recycling is defined as the mineralization of N within the year of its incorporation into herbage, which occurs through release from faeces, animal urine and non-harvested biomass. We simulated changes in inorganic and organic N per hectare, and the consequent emission (E), mineralization (M s ) and recycling (R) of N for different initial amounts of inorganic and organic N. Results demonstrate that in the long term, the system evolves to equilibrium amounts of inorganic and organic N, which are strongly determined by the imposed management practices, such as fertilizer input and grassland management. In the short term, moving away from the equilibrium is possible for particular initial amounts of inorganic and organic N. In the equilibrium state, E was reduced by lowering inorganic fertilizer input rate, increasing grassland productivity and improving animal N conversion efficiency, i.e., only by production-related parameters. Only in the short term E was affected by adjustments in quality-related parameters: lower N content, lower digestibility of herbage, reduced degradability of non-harvested biomass and faeces, and parameters determining the functioning of soil biota (degradation rate, efficiency, C/N ratio). Qualityrelated parameters had no effect on internal nutrient cycling in the equilibrium state, because adjustments in M s were completely compensated by changes in R. A comparison of farming systems demonstrated that farming systems can be designed in such a way that improvement of internal nutrient cycling supports the same production with lower inputs and lower emissions.
