The study surveyed plants used as ethnoveterinary among the Fulani people of Girei, Adamawa State, Nigeria. A total of 100 key guided respondents interview and focus group discussion mainly the Jauro, Jemila, Ardo and few herdsmen along Girei-Mubi road who were highly experienced and inherited the knowledge of ethnoveterinary from their fore fathers were targeted during the study. The results identified 30 medicinal plants species alongside with different livestock diseases conditions they treat. The Fulani names, part of plants and mode of preparations were also documented. However, there was significance use of cow milk (Madara or Nunu) and evaporites or potash (Kanwa) as recipes in livestock diseases management. The leaves (61.29%) were commonly used, bark (25.80%), root (6.45%) and fruits (6.45%). The phytochemical screening of the available plants showed presence of secondary metabolites such as saponins, alkaloids, tannins, anthraquinone and steroids/triterpenes that are responsible for its antibacterial, antifungal, wound healing, anti-venom, and other pharmacological activities which when extracted, purified and isolated could be used in the development of new drugs for livestock management.

Ethnoveterinary Survey of Plants used in Treating Livestock among the Fulani people of Girei, Adamawa State, Nigeria

Objective To determine providers’ perceived barriers to utilization of antenatal and delivery services in urban and rural communities of Ebonyi state, Nigeria. Methods A descriptive exploratory study design was used. Qualitative data was collected through the use of a pre-tested interview guide. Twelve providers participated in the study in urban and rural communities of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. They included nine officers in charge of primary health centers, two Chief Nursing Officers of a tertiary health institution and mission hospital and one Medical Officer-in-charge of a General hospital. QDA Miner Lite v2.0.6 was used in the analysis of the data. Results Most providers in urban and rural communities attributed good utilization of maternal health services to delivery of quality care. Most providers in urban linked poor utilization to poor health seeking behavior of women. In rural, poor utilization was credited to poor attitude of health workers. Few of participants (urban and rural) pointed out the neglect of primary health centers resulting in poor utilization. Most participants (urban and rural) considered ignorance as the main barrier to using health facilities for antenatal and delivery services. Another constraint identified was cost of services. Most participants attested that good provider attitude and public enlightenment will improve utilization of health facilities for antenatal and delivery care. All participants agreed on the need to involve men in matters related to maternal healthcare. Conclusions Participants were aware of values of good provider attitude and this is commendable. This combined with the finding of poor attitude of health workers necessitates that health workers should be trained on quality of care. There is need for public enlightenment on need to utilize health facilities for antenatal and delivery services. Community ownership of primary health centers especially in rural communities will enhance utilization of such facilities for maternal healthcare services and should be encouraged. Involvement of men in matters related to maternal healthcare may have a positive influence in improving maternal health in Nigeria.

Indigenous Communication's Role in Traditional Birth Attendants in Maternal Health Practices

Maternal mortality remains high in Nigeria, especially in rural areas where many women avail themselves of traditional maternal health care from unskilled providers such as traditional birth attendants (TBAs) . This study examined the use of traditional maternal health care among 120 rural women in 3 local government areas in Oyo State, Nigeria. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire. The results showed that the average age of the respondents was 35 years, most were married, had no formal education, were traders/farmers, and had a low monthly income The primary reason for implementing TBA was increased hospital costs. The primary sources of information were family members. The main services used were alcoholism, umbilical cords, and infant circumcision. Overall, 57.5% of respondents used TBA sparingly. There were significant associations between educational level, age, household size, income, source of information, selection reasons, and use of TBA. They suggest that the government should improve awareness of the risks associated with TBA practices, reduce hospital costs, ensure skilled staffing in health facilities, and appropriately train TBAs.

Utilisation of Traditional Maternal Health Care Services Among Rural Women in Oyo State, Nigeria

Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) are found in most communities in the world. Although their nature and functions varied considerably. Their practices aimed at providing medical related services for the maintenance of good maternal health, particularly through ensuring good delivery. Original Research Article Abdulhamid et al.; JOCAMR, 2(2): 1-7, 2017; Article no.JOCAMR.27773 2 The study aimed to assess the perceptions of women on TBAs in Zaria Kaduna State, Nigeria. The State is part of Hausa and Fulani land where ethno medicine is recognised and highly practiced. Hausa and Fulani tribes of Zaria were selected for the study. A total of 200 women were randomly selected and interviewed. The information provided were recorded on structured questionnaires. The results showed that TBAs have made great impact in such communities. Low risk perception regarding their personal susceptibility to pregnancy and labour complications was one of the main reasons why most old women with many children delivered at home and utilized TBAs. Respondents showed that TBAs are available at any time, easily accessed, always reliable for pregnant patient women to attend at any moment, caring of women in labour or outside labour. Also they rendered their services to maximum capacity. Respondents in the study area indicated their confidence and beliefs towards utilizing TBAs services. In conclusion pregnant women’s positive attitude towards TBAs was one of the main reasons why most of them preferred the services provided by TBAs. There is no doubt that such TBAs will continue to play an important role in health care provision in the study area. Therefore, comprehensive training of TBAs to act as primary health care workers in community should be considered and implemented.
