Publisher Summary This chapter describes the principles of polystep catalysis, the technique of physically mixed catalytic components, some major polystep reactions of hydrocarbons, the petroleum naphtha reforming reaction, and other polystep reactions. Reactions on solid catalysts can proceed by several distinct steps of chemical transformation, each catalyzed by distinctly different types of catalytic sites. The chemical intermediates can exist as true desorbed species in the phase above the catalyst. The kinetic steps of the sequence of reactions are coupled to each other through the processes of diffusion of these intermediates. The classical laws of diffusion create a qualitative and quantitative link between the rate process and the thermodynamics of reaction steps. The criteria and principles involved have general applicability not only in catalytic hydrocarbon transformations, but also in other catalyzed organic reactions, in some of the largest scale industrial processes, in chemical laboratory experience, and in the biochemical world of life processes.

Polyfunctional Heterogeneous Catalysis

A method has been developed for the preparation of uniform palladium particles of diameter from 55 to 450 angstroms. Uniform particles of gold layered on palladium were also synthesized. Hydrothermal treatment of aluminum hydroxide sol was used to prepare rods of alumina with uniform cross section from 100 to 500 angstroms and of varying lengths. The palladium was adsorbed as individual particles on alumina rods, both present in aqueous suspension. Then the suspension was dried to give a catalyst containing metal particles of uniform size dispersed in open pores produced by the intermeshing of the alumina rods. This procedure guaranteed the absence of diffusion control in the rate of reactions observed experimentally. All stages of the preparation were monitored with the electron microscope. The kinetics of the ethylene-hydrogen reaction were examined by means of a pulse technique. The number of active sites determined by carbon monoxide titration of the surface was equal to the number of surface atoms as determined by the calculation of the quantities of compounds involved in the synthesis and electron microscope examination. Furthermore, the activity per site depended on the method of preparation, being four times smaller when sodium formate was used as a reducing agent instead of sodium citrate. This may be due to the fact that the shape of particles makes certain crystallographic planes more favorable. Decrease in the size of particles to 56 angstroms produced no effect on catalytic activity beyond that due to the increase in the number of surface atoms. The activity of commercial 5 percent palladium on alumina diluted 100-fold with alumina gave 80.4 percent conversion with propylene and 82.7 percent conversion with ethylene. Thus there was little difference in the behavior of the two olefins.

Palladium: preparation and catalytic properties of particles of uniform size.

The steady-state flow method has been widely used in the kinetic study of heterogeneous catalysis. Under the conditions of steady state, all elementary steps in series are progressing at the same rate and hence the measured rates hardly tell the precise kinetic structure, or mechanism, of catalytic reactions which usually consist of several elementary steps including adsorption of reactants, surface reaction, and desorption of products. In the kinetic analyses of any given reactions, it is a common practice for the investigator to postulate a number of suspected rate models and then to assess these models to verify a optimal one which best fits observed rate data. Usually, however, there are quite a large number of plausible rate models even for a rather simple reaction, and it is not easy to determine the most adequate model among others even with the help of mathematical model indentification techniques with a electronic computer. Transient response method in heterogeneous catalysis

Theoretical and experimental work is described which leads to a novel hypothesis for explaining the selectivity in heterogeneous vapor phase hydrocarbon oxidation catalysis. Two essential postulates of the hypothesis are: 


The oxygen atoms must be distributed on the surface of a selective oxidation catalyst in an arrangement which provides for limitation of the number of active oxygen atoms in various isolated groups.


The metal-oxygen bond energy of the active oxygen atoms, at the conditions of reaction, must be in a range where rapid removal (hydrocarbon oxidation) and addition (regeneration by oxygen) is assured.



Monte Carlo methods are used to illustrate the distribution of isolated sites on catalytic surfaces under the dynamic conditions of hydrocarbon oxidation reactions. Differences in catalyst and process requirements between oxidation processes operating in an overall oxidizing or reducing atmosphere are discussed.

A selectivity factor in vapor‐phase hydrocarbon oxidation catalysis

It is possible to consider the local rate of reaction in a fluid phase as a function of state variables, r(C, p, T). We assume that the concentrations of all the components C, which may, for example, be important in initiation and termination are included in the description. The rate must also be slow compared to other phenomena which might create a nonuniform mixture on the scale in which we are interested. If these restrictions are respected, we then can describe the rate in terms of a sequence of elementary steps, providing all the active intermediates are known. For gases the rate parameters (frequency factors, activation energy) for many elementary reactions have been measured; these matters are discussed, for example, in the book by Johnston [l]. The rate r (g-mole/cm3-sec) is in a certain sense a state function; it becomes related to a derivative or other quantities only as it appears in the conservation equations.
