Liquid crystal waveguides for dynamically controlling the refraction of light. Generally, liquid crystal materials may be disposed within a waveguide in a cladding proximate or adjacent to a core layer of the waveguide. In one example, portions of the liquid crystal material can be induced to form refractive or lens shapes in the cladding that interact with a portion (e.g. evanescent) of light in the waveguide so as to permit electronic control of the refraction/bending, focusing, or defocusing of light as it travels through the waveguide. In one example, a waveguide may be formed using one or more patterned or shaped electrodes that induce formation of such refractive or lens shapes of liquid crystal material, or alternatively, an alignment layer may have one or more regions that define such refractive or lens shapes to induce formation of refractive or lens shapes of the liquid crystal material. In another example, such refractive or lens shapes of liquid crystal material may be formed by patterning or shaping a cladding to define a region or cavity to contain liquid crystal material in which the liquid crystal materials may interact with the evanescent light.

Liquid crystal waveguide having refractive shapes for dynamically controlling light

The feasibility of realizing an active terahertz (THz) switch by utilizing artificially corrugated perfect conductor metamaterials is reported in this paper by demonstrating that the strongly localized THz spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) modes can be easily controlled by changing the refractive index of dielectrics inside a longitudinal metallic structure with a periodic array of grooves. Specifically, this paper shows that incorporation of electrooptical material such as a nematic liquid crystal into the plasmonic gap leads to a highly compact and efficient THz switch that is activated by a low-voltage control-signal. The optimal design of the SSPP switch enabled by this novel method shows: 1) a strong subwavelength SSPP localization; 2) relatively high extinction ratio; and 3) small damping attenuation. Furthermore, the design flexibility associated with simple micrometer-scale architecture provides a promising method toward controlling or steering the subwavelength THz signal in the future SSPP-based compact digital circuit.

Active Terahertz Spoof Surface Plasmon Polariton Switch Comprising the Perfect Conductor Metamaterial

An optofluidic 1×4 switch is designed, fabricated, and tested. The switch is based on a blazed diffraction grating imprinted onto silicone elastomer at the bottom of a microfluidic channel that is filled with liquids with different refractive indices. When the condition of a diffraction maximum is met, the laser beam incident on the grating is deflected by an angle proportional to the refractive index mismatch between the elastomer and the liquid in the channel. The switch was tested using four different aqueous salt solutions generating 0th to 3rd orders of diffraction. The insertion loss was 9.8dB, and the response time was 55 ms. The same basic design can be used to build optofluidic switches with more than 4 outputs.

This paper reviews liquid crystal optical devices including tunable filters, photonic switches and spatial light modulators, and examines their application to optical communication and information processing systems. Optical processing has three major advantages: massive parallelism, high speed and broad wavebands. Compared with typical optical materials including silica, semiconductors and inorganic electrooptic crystals used in communication systems, a liquid crystal has a number of outstanding features including its large refractive index change and large polarization rotation power at a low voltage. These features make it possible to develop new optical components.

Liquid crystal devices for optical communication and information processing systems

We demonstrate a compact, low-power and broadband electro-optic switch in a simple waveguide geometry with undoped nematic liquid crystals. We experimentally achieve near infrared switching and signal routing with voltage modulations as low as 0.21V and a device length of 0.16mm.

Switching action is based on total internal reflection caused by an electrically controlled change in refractive index of the liquid crystal. Propagation loss was remarkably reduced to 2.3 dB/cm, both by using liquid crystal as a cladding layer and by operating at the 1.31 μm wavelength. The experimental matrix switch exhibited 7.3-7.7 dB insertion loss, -17.3 to -18.2 dB crosstalk, and a 14° switching angle.
