All parts of Leptadenia pyrotechnica are used in traditional medicines. The present arti cle gives an account of updated information on its phytochemistry pharmacological properties. E thnomedical uses say to possess significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibac terial, anthelmentic, antilipoxygenase, cytotoxic, antitumour, hypolipidemic and anti ather osclerotic activity. The present review contains wide number of isolated chemical constitue nts and various ethnomedical and traditional uses of Leptadenia pyrotechnica . It include information about historical background, conceptual basis, different disciplines studied in the systems, research and development aspects, drug manufacturing aspects and impact of globalization.

Leptadenia pyrotechnica is an important medicinal plant of the family, Asclepiadaceae. It is usually found in the desert habitat, and generally used for the treatment of various diseases. The green parts of the plant species are used as fodder and vegetable, and are a very important source of protein, calcium, dietary fiber, phosphorus, vitamin C, and iron. Good quality fibers and many active pharmacological constituents are produced from this plant. The crude extracts of L. pyrotechnica contains five polyphenolic compounds, i.e., caffeic acid, epicatechin, gallic acid, vanillic acid, and quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside. The aim of the present chapter is to entail the details of nutritional, economic, and medicinal values, phytochemistry, and conservation status of this important plant.

Leptadenia pyrotechnica (Forssk.) Decne (Synonym-L.Spartinum Wight) belonging to family Asclepiadaceae is one of such medicinal plant s, locally known as Khimp or Khip (Rajasthan ), Khimparlo, Thahawar, Ranser (Gujarat), Broom bush (English) is an erect ,ascending ,shrub up to 1.5m-3m high with green stem and pale green alternating bushy branches with watery sap. Leptadenia pyrotechnica (forsk) decne,is a valuable desert plant which is commonly used in traditional system of medicine for relieving pain and inflammation, as well as in a numbe r of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obes ity. It is common throughout the state of Ra jasthan and found in dry habitats particularly in de sert zones. In India it is commonly found in Banswara, Palod, Dungarpur and Bikaner. Leptadenia pyrotechnica is a straight, broomlike shrub, 1.0 m-3.0 m high with green stem and pale green alternating bushy branches. It cont ains watery sap. The leaves are rarely found and if found, they are small deciduous and linear-lan ceolate. The flowers are clustered in short a uxillary chymes and are greenish yellow. The sepals of e ach flower are joined at base only and flowe r is bisexual pentamerous acting morphic. The seeds are 57mm long, numerous, comose (hairy) with tufted hairs of about 2.5-3.5 cm long floweri ng and fruiting of Leptadenia pyrotechnica occurs from August to January.

Direct Organogenesis in Leptadenia pyrotechnica (Forssk.) from nodal segment - An important Medicinal Plant

Leptadenia pyrotechnica Forssk. Decne (LP) is a medicinal herb from the Asclepiadaceae family with many advantageous properties. The goal of this research is to identify, quantify, and evaluate the antioxidant potential of LP to validate its remarkable therapeutic advantages. The hot soxhlet extraction method was employed to prepare different extracts of LP (stem and root). These extracts were evaluated physiochemically to check their impurity, purity, and quality; qualitatively to detect different phytochemicals; and quantitatively for phenol, saponin, tannin, flavonoid, and alkaloid contents. Then, the in vitro antioxidant potential was estimated by DPPH, NO, H2O2 scavenging assays, and MC and FRAP assays. The most prevalent phytochemicals of LP were then analysed by AAS, FT-IR, UV–visible, and GC-MS techniques. A higher extractive yield was shown by LPSE and LPRE (7.37 ± 0.11 and 5.70 ± 0.02). The LP stem showed better physicochemical and qualitative results than the root. The quantitative and in vitro antioxidant results indicated maximal phenols, tannins, and alkaloid contents in LPSE, which was further confirmed by UV–visible, FT-IR, and GC-MS results. The extraction methods (soxhlation or ultrasonication) were optimized by utilizing RSM to determine the impacts of multiple parameters. The study concluded that the plant has remarkable therapeutic advantages to promote additional clinical investigations and the mechanisms of its action.
