A method and system for managing the transfer of message packets between first and second nodes in a message queuing system utilizes a session acknowledgment protocol to coordinate the two-way flow of packet transmission. In a session initiation phase, each node specifies a session acknowledgment timeout period and a transmission window size for transmission of message packets thereto. During the session, the first node transmits multiple message packets up to the window size set by the second node and stops to wait for a session acknowledgment from the second computer. The session acknowledgment may piggyback on a message packet sent to the first node. A window-size field in the session acknowledgment allows the receiving node to dynamically adjust the incoming data flow.

Multi-enterprise processes (MEPs) are workflows consisting of a set of activities that are implemented by different enterprises Tightly coupled Virtual Enterprises (VEs) typically agree on abstract MEPs (reference MEPs), to which each enterprise contributes single-enterprise processes (SEPs) that implement and refine the activities in the reference MEP On the other end of the spectrum, loosely coupled VEs use service-based MEPs that fuse together heterogeneous services implemented and provided by different enterprises Existing process models usually couple activities with their implementation Therefore, they cannot effectively support such MEPs In this paper, we introduce a Polymorphic Process Model (PPM) that supports both reference process- and service-based MEPs To accomplish this, PPM decouples activity interface from activity implementation, and provides process polymorphism to support their mapping In particular, PPM determines activity types from the activity interfaces, permits activity interface subtyping, and provides for the mapping of MEP activity types to concrete implementations via interface matching We illustrate that these key PPM capabilities permit the late binding and use of multiple activity implementations within a MEP without modifying the MEP at run time or enumerating the alternative implementation at specification time

A method and system for coordinating distributed transactions provides atomic processing of distributed transactions on computers in a network with asynchronous message delivery. In a distributed transaction, an application on a first computer initiates a first operation and sends a request message for a second operation to a second application on a remote computer. The first operation and the sending of the request message are performed in a local committed transaction on the first computer. The request message is delivered exactly once and in order to the remote computer and is read by the second application. The performance of the second operation and the sending of an acknowledgment to the first application are performed in a local committed transaction by the second computer. The sending computer and the receiving computer of the request message may be on two different message queuing systems bridged by a connector computer which translates a message from one message queuing system and forwards the message to the destination queue in the other message queuing system.

Method and system for distributed transaction processing with asynchronous message delivery

A message driven processor operates as middleware between clients and back-end hosts or servers in a large client-server system to reduce the number of concurrent sessions required to be supported by the network and to allow a common client user interface to divergent back-end systems. High level requests from a client in support of a business function are translated into workflows which may involve multiple requests to back-end servers by the message driven processor. Information resulting from workflows and information retrieved from back-end servers may be integrated into a single reply message to the requesting client.

A specific task of distributed and parallel information systems is workflow management, In particular, workflow management system execute business processes that run on top of distributed and parallel information systems. Parallelism is due to performance requirements and involves data and applications that are spread across a heterogeneous, distributed computing environment. Heterogeneity and distribution of the underlying computing infrastructure should be made transparent in order to alleviate programming and use. We introduce an implementation architecture for workflow management systems that meets best these requirements. Scalability (through transparent parallelism) and transparency with respect to distribution and heterogeneity are the major characteristics of this architecture. A generic client/server class library in an object-oriented environment demonstrates the feasibility of the approach taken. >

A client/server architecture for distributed workflow management systems

Application programs are a substantial asset of an organization. The introduction of workflow management technology must provide means and mechanisms to integrate existing application programs which are not aware of workflow management systems in the same seamless manner as newly written, workflow-aware applications. The paper presents a general approach for integrating workflow-unaware application programs into workflow management systems. Their concepts enable the integration of application programs which are implemented on top of heterogeneous operating systems or base services into our prototype workflow management system MOBILE. Furthermore, they support the execution of several transactional application programs within a single transaction controlled by the workflow management system.

A general framework for the execution of heterogenous programs in workflow management systems

In distributed workflow management systems (WfMSs) many workflow servers and application programs referenced within workflows have to work together cooperatively. We introduce a middleware service for WfMSs which offers qualities for client/server communication. These qualities characterize the behavior of clients and servers in case of failure and recovery. Our middleware service builds an abstraction from the concrete implementation of a client/server interaction and hides characteristics of underlying system services, e.g. RPC mechanisms and TP monitors. For this reason, our middleware service supports the implementation of reliable distributed WfMSs.
