Big GIS analytics framework for agriculture supply chains: A literature review identifying the current trends and future perspectives

Land suitability evaluation is prerequisite for assessing the limitations for sustainable land use planning. We used ten site specific criteria (rainfall, texture, drainage, soil depth, slope, distance to major road, distance to nearest sugar mill, erosion hazard, risk of flooding and pH) and applied weighted multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) technique in a geographic information system (GIS) environment to evaluate land suitability for sugarcane cultivation in Bijnor district, India. The weightage of all the parameters was calculated through fuzzy analytical hierarchy process. Sugarcane suitability map was prepared integrating various parameters through weighted overlay analysis. The map was categorized as highly suitable (S1), moderately suitable (S2), marginally suitable (S3) and unsuitable (N). The analysis revealed that of the total cultivable land of the district, largest area (61%) was highly suitable followed by moderately suitable (24%), marginally suitable (7%) and unsuitable (8%) for sugarcane cultivation. Nagina, Najibabad and Bijnor sub-districts need attention of land managers and policy makers to remove the limitations and increase the suitability of sugarcane in such areas. Only 7% area was unsuitable for sugarcane cultivation. Slope, soil depth and erosion hazard were the major limiting factors making the land unsuitable for sugarcane cultivation. Therefore, these areas should be given priority for land and soil restoration efforts. The study showed effectiveness of integrated GIS and MCE approach for land suitability analysis of sugarcane.

This study presents a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based geostatistical and visualization analysis of crop suitability in two blocks of sub-mountain area of Punjab under diversification programme. It combines the limitation approach of land capability classification, productivity potential evaluation procedure and crop suitability evaluation framework of FAO. Two blocks from the sub mountain Siwalik region of Punjab viz., Mahalpur and Garhshankar were selected. This study evaluates the capabilities of the study area for traditional crops like wheat, paddy and maize, and recently introduced crops like sugarcane, sunflower, pea, rapeseed-mustard, potatoes and kinnow for agricultural diversification. The suitability of the crops has been worked out at the village level. About 35–40 per cent of total area mostly in Siwallik hills is not fit for growing any type of crop. Sandy texture, uneven topography, moderately steep slopes and excessive drainage are responsible for unsuitability of this area. The GIS based suitability analysis for traditional crops as well as for new crops, under diversification of agriculture has been undertaken. The geostatistical analysis points towards suitability of relatively large areas for new crops like sunflower, potato, pea (green) and sugarcane. Forty three and 14 per cent of total area has been found highly suitable and suitable respectively for growing green pea - a cash crop. Thirty three per cent of total area is suitable for growing kinnow fruit. The success of diversification programme is subject to logical government policy in terms of providing cold storage, food processing facility and marketing infrastructure.

Forty three and 14 per cent of total area has been found highly suitable and suitable, respectively for growing green pea- a cash crop. Thirty three per cent of total area is suitable for growing kinnow mandarin fruit.

Crop suitability analysis for crop diversification in the sub-mountain zone - a case study.

Sand dune areas in the semi-arid and arid agro-ecological sub-region covering a part of central and south-western Punjab were studied to generate comprehensive information on morphological, physico-chemical characteristics, constraints and potential of the soils. The dunal soils of semiarid and arid sub-regions are very deep, excessively drained, light yellowish brown to strong brown, sandy loam to sand, structureless and exhibit A-C horizon sequence. The soils of arid sub-region have relatively higher pH (7.8 to 8.5) than semi-arid soils due to calcareous nature of the former. The electrical conductivity (EC) is within the non-saline range (0.02 to 0.26 dS m−1) in semi-arid soils, and non-saline to saline range (0.09 to 0.84 dS m−1) in arid soils. The organic carbon (OC) content is low, both at surface and subsurface horizons (0.02 to 0.36%) having relatively higher OC in soils from semi-arid sub-region. The coarser textured soils have very low cation exchange capacity (CEC) [wt. mean = 1.4 to 4.4 cmol(p+)kg−1] with calcium and magnesium as dominant cations on the exchange complex. The soils from semi-arid sub-region were classified as mixed, hyperthermic family of Typic Ustipsamments whereas that of arid sub-region keyed out as mixed, calcareous, hyperthermic family of Ustic Torripsamments. The soils from arid sub-region have relatively more limitations such as aridity, sandy texture, undulating topography, accumulation of calcium carbonate, hard concretionary substratum, moderate wind erosion and low CEC. Besides being low in fertility, these soils are more prone to micronutrient deficiency due to highly calcareous nature.
