This manuscript explores the influence of atomic structure on glass forming ability and thermal stability in binary metallic glasses. A critical assessment gives literature data for 628 alloys from 175 binary glass systems. The atomic structure is quantified for each alloy using the efficient cluster packing model. Comparison of atomic structure with amorphous thickness and thermal stability gives the following major results. Binary glasses show a strong preference for discrete solute to solvent atomic radius ratios R*, which give efficient local atomic packing. Of 15 possible R* values, only five are common and only four represent the most stable glasses. The most stable binary glasses are also typically solute rich, with enough solute atoms to fill all the solute sites and roughly one-third of the solvent sites. An assessment of binary metallic glasses: correlations between structure, glass forming ability and stability

In the present review article, firstly, the experimental observations of the binary metallic glass formation by various glass-producing techniques are briefly summarized. Secondly, a detailed discussion is presented concerning the concepts of the glass-forming ability and glass-forming range (GFA/GFR) of a binary metal system. Meanwhile, some of the proposed empirical criteria or rules for predicting the binary metallic glass formation are discussed and compared with the experimental observations. Thirdly, it is proposed to take the interatomic potential of a binary metal system as the starting base to develop an atomistic theory capable of predicting the binary metallic glass formation. Accordingly, eight binary metal systems are selected as representatives to cover the various structural combinations as well as various thermodynamic characteristics. The n-body potentials of eight representative systems are then constructed with the aid of ab initio calculations. Applying the constructed and proven realistic n-body potentials, a series of molecular dynamics simulations are carried out. In the simulations, solid solution models are employed to compare the relative stability of the solid solution versus its competing disordered counterpart (i.e. the amorphous or metallic glass phase) as a function of the solute concentration. Finally, based on the realistic interatomic potentials, molecular dynamics simulations not only reveal the physical origin of the binary metallic glass formation, but also quantitatively determine, for each system, an alloy composition range, within which the disordered state is energetically favored, thus leading to establish the atomistic theory capable of predicting the GFR, i.e. the quantitative GFA, of the binary metal systems.

The superconductivity behavior of rapidly quenched Be32.5NbxZr67.5−x (x = 0, 2.5, 4 and 5 at .%) alloys was investigated. Measurements were made in the as-quenched state as well as after several annealing procedures. The superconducting critical field curves are shifted to lower values up to the annealing temperature of about 350°C whereas the resistivity ϱ does not change indicating a topological relaxation only. Superconductivity and thermal relaxation of amorphous BeNbZr alloys

31 p and 11 B NMR investigations are performed on as-quenched amorphous (Mo 60 Rh 40 ) 0.8 P 20 and (Mo 30 Rh 70 ) 0.8 B 20 alloys. The superconducting transition temperatures are 4.9 K and 1.8 K, respectively. The Knight shift values found are 0.048 ± 0.002% for P and 0.006 ± 0.002% for B. An NMR line width analysis using second moment calculations leads to the assumption that a fraction of the metalloid atoms should have smaller distances to each other compared to their average distances.
