From Chaps. 1 and 2 we have seen that molecular energy levels and the corresponding transition spectra are very complicated. In fact, even the simplest diatomic molecule will give rise to a spectrum far more complicated than an atomic spectrum. An atomic electronic level can take evolution to form two or more molecular electronic states, corresponding to different couples between the valences’ spins when the atoms are getting closer. Each of the molecular electronic states contains tens of vibrational levels, each of which in turn contains about a hundred rotational levels.

Simplification and Identification of Molecular Spectra

Even small molecules produce spectra complicated enough so that their analysis is complex and difficult. In Nat, for instance, only six excited singlet electronic states have been identified by conventional spectroscopy. We have, therefore, studied several methods of using lasers to identify a selected energy level, and thereby simplify the spectrum.
