Gamma rays with energies greater than 7 TeV from the Crab pulsar/nebula have been observed at large zenith angles, using the Imaging Atmospheric Technique from Woomera, South Australia. CANGAROO data taken in 1992, 1993 and 1995 indicate that the energy spectrum extends up to at least 50 TeV, without a change of the index of the power law spectrum. The observed differential spectrum is \noindent $(2.01\pm 0.36)\times 10^{-13}(E/{7 TeV})^{-2.53 \pm 0.18} TeV^{-1}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ between 7 TeV and 50 TeV. There is no apparent cut-off. The spectrum for photon energies above $\sim$10 TeV allows the maximum particle acceleration energy to be inferred, and implies that this unpulsed emission does not originate near the light cylinder of the pulsar, but in the nebula where the magnetic field is not strong enough to allow pair creation from the TeV photons. The hard gamma-ray energy spectrum above 10 TeV also provides information about the varying role of seed photons for the inverse Compton process at these high energies, as well as a possible contribution of $\pi ^{\circ}$-gamma rays from proton collisions.

Detection of Gamma Rays of Up to 50 TeV From the Crab Nebula

A search for potential point sources of very high energy gamma rays has been carried out on the data taken simultaneously by the HEGRA AIROBICC and Scintillator arrays from August 1994 to March 2000. The list of sought sources includes supernova remnants, pulsars, AGNs and binary systems. The energy threshold is around 15 TeV. For the Crab Nebula, a modest excess of 2.5 standard deviations above the cosmic ray background has been observed. Flux upper limits (at 90% c.l.) of around 1.3 times the flux of the Crab Nebula are obtained, on average, for the candidate sources. A different search procedure has been used for an all-sky search which yields absolute flux upper limits between 4 and 9 crabs depending on declination, in the band from 0 to 60 degrees.

The observational data for the Galactic source Cygnus X-3 collected with the SHALON mirror Cherenkov telescope are presented. The Cygnus X-3 binary have been regularly observed since 1995 with the average γ-ray flux F (E > 0.8 TeV) = (6.8 ± 0.7) × 10-13cm-2s-1. The flux in year 2003 was (1.79 ± 0.33) × 10-12cm-2s-1. Earlier, in 1997, an increase of the flux was also observed.

Energy Spectrum of Very High Energy Gamma-Quanta from Cygnus X-3 in Year 2003

The techniques for γ-ray astronomy at energies ≥10 TeV using air shower detectors are discussed. The results, based on a number of large arrays, are negative, with no point sources being identified. While the contributions to γ-ray astronomy so far have been only upper limits, these arrays in the future will make significant progress in the understanding of cosmic rays in the energy range 1013 eV to 1016 eV. Also, contributions to solar physics are being made by observations of shape and time dependence of the shadow of the Sun as observed in cosmic rays. For the advancement of γ-ray astronomy a greater sensitivity is required in the energy region of 10 TeV. A number of promising techniques to accomplish a greater sensitivity are discussed. They include the enlargement of the Tibet array at 4300 meters altitude, the array of open photomultipliers at La Palma (AIROBICC), which views the shower by the Cherenkov photons produced in the atmosphere, and the instrumentation of a pond at Los Alamos with photomultipliers (Milagro).

Gamma-ray astronomy by the air shower technique: Performance and perspectives

Cyg X-3 is actively studied in the entire range of the electromagnetic spectrum from the radio band to ultrahigh energies. Based on the detection of ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray emission, it has been suggested that Cyg X-3 could be one of the most powerful sources of charged cosmic-ray particles in the Galaxy. We present the results of long-term observations of the Cygnus Х-3 region at energies 800 GeV–100 TeV by the SHALON mirror Cherenkov telescope. In 1995 the SHALON observations revealed a new Galactic source of very high energy gamma-ray emission coincident in its coordinates with the microquasar Cyg X-3. To reliably identify the detected source with Cyg X-3, an analysis has been performed and an orbital period of 4.8 h has been found, which is a signature of Cyg X-3. A series of flares in Cyg X-3 at energies >800 GeV and their correlation with the activity in the X-ray and radio bands have been observed. The results obtained in a wide energy range for Cyg X-3, including those during the periods of relativistic jet events, are needed to find the connection and to understand the different components of an accreting binary system.
