In the present study the possibility of formation of chromium and vanadium carbide composite coatings on CK45 steel by Thermal Reactive Diffusion method was studied. Two different baths (metal and oxide) and different substrates (CK45 steel and pure iron) were used. Composite carbide coatings including a base phase of chromium carbide (Cr 23 C 6 , Cr 7 C 3 ), and reinforce of vanadium carbide (V 8 C 7 ) were formed on CK45 steel. Also the complex carbide phase of Cr 2 VC 2 has been formed in the carbide coating layer based on XRD results. The ratio of reinforce to the base phase was 0.37 and 0.47, respectively for metal bath and oxide bath. Phase distribution of vanadium carbide in the chromium carbide base phase in metal bath was more homogeneous than in oxide bath. The thickness of the composite carbide coating was 6 μm greater in metal bath than in oxide bath. In addition to carbon, iron diffusion has also occurred from the substrate into the coating. Results indicate that composite chromium and vanadium carbide coatings were successfully formed on CK45 sample in the borax baths consisting of either chromium/vanadium metal powders, or chromium/vanadium oxide powders.

A Ni 3 Si–Cr 7 C 3 composite coating was fabricated on AISI 1020 steel substrate by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) casting route. Phase composition, microhardness and dry sliding wear behavior of the coating were studied. The results indicated that the coating was mainly consisted of Ni 3 Si and Cr 7 C 3 . The microhardness of coating is about 900 HV. The friction and wear tests showed that although the friction coefficient had no obvious change, the wear resistance of the AISI 1020 steel matrix was improved greatly. Also, the corrosion test result showed that the coating had an excellent corrosion resistance.

A study of Ni3Si-based composite coating fabricated by self-propagating high temperature synthesis casting route

Chromium carbide coatings deposited by the salt bath method have a lot of technologically interesting characteristics. This method produces hard, wear–resistant, oxidation and corrosion–resistant coating layers on steel substrates. In the present study, the kinetics of chromium carbide formation on carburized and uncarburized AISI 1020 steel substrates has been compared. The presence of the Cr7C3 phase on the surface of steel substrates was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Cross–sectional observation of optical and SEM images showed that chromium carbide layers formed on the steel substrates were rather compact and smooth. The kinetics of chromium carbide coating by salt bath immersion indicated a parabolic relationship between carbide layer thickness and treatment time. The activation energy of the formation of carbide on the surface of carburized and uncarburized steel was calculated to be 87.9 and 225.6 kJ/mol, respectively. Moreover, an attempt was made to present contour diagrams for predicting the thickness of the chromium carbide layer. In addition, the possibility of establishing and using some mathematical relationships between process parameters and chromium carbide layer thickness was investigated.
