Since their introduction in the late 1970s, sequential extraction procedures have experienced a rapid increase in use. They are now applied for a large number of potentially toxic elements in a wide range of sample types. This review uses evidence from the literature to consider the usefulness and limitations of sequential extraction and thereby to assess its future role in environmental chemical analysis. It is not the intention to provide a comprehensive survey of all applications of sequential extractions or to consider the merits and disadvantages of individual schemes. These aspects have been covered adequately in other, recent reviews. This review focuses in particular on various key issues surrounding sequential extractions such as nomenclature, methodologies, presentation of data and interpretation of data, and discusses typical applications from the recent literature for which sequential extraction can provide useful and meaningful information. Also covered are emerging developments such as accelerated procedures using ultrasound- or microwave energy-assisted extractions, dynamic extractions, the use of chemometrics, the combination of sequential extraction with isotope analysis, and the extension of the approach to non-traditional analytes such as arsenic, mercury, selenium and radionuclides.

Selenium is usually known as the ‘double-edged sword element' for its dual toxic and beneficial character to health. Since the pioneer works by Schwarz and Foltz on the relationships between selenium deficiency and liver, muscle and heart diseases, many efforts have been undertaken to better understand the role of selenium in health. At the same time, an increasing number of publications have appeared during these last years on the selenium physico–chemical interactions within the environment. Both types of research represent ongoing efforts to correctly estimate the bioavailability of selenium species for health and the environment. Redox reactions, diffusion, adsorption and precipitation processes or interactions with organic matter and biota govern the speciation and mobility of selenium in the environment. This review intends to emphasize and collect the important advances made during these last years in the mechanistic understanding of processes which govern selenium cycling and bioavailability, like adsorption at the mineral/water interface, precipitation of elemental selenium, or bioavailability of nanoscaled precipitates. The advent of powerful spectroscopic techniques, like X-ray absorption spectroscopy, has allowed the structural description of adsorption and substitution processes that selenium undergoes in a variety of minerals. These and other structural details about selenium precipitates are reviewed here, together with their relationships to the bioavailability of the element in the environment.

Interaction between selenium and soil organic matter and its impact on soil selenium bioavailability: A review

This study provides a large set of experimental selenite sorption data for pure smectite and illite. Similar sorption behavior existed in both clays: linear within a large range of the Se concentrations investigated (from 1x10(-10) to 1x10(-3) M); and independent of ionic strength. Selenite sorption was also analysed in the illite/smectite system with the clays mixed in two different proportions, as follows: (a) 30% illite-70% smectite and (b) 43% illite-57% smectite. The objective of the study was to provide the simplest model possible to fit the experimental data, a model also capable of describing selenite sorption in binary illite/smectite clay systems. Selenite sorption data, separately obtained in the single mineral systems, were modeled using both a one- and a two-site non-electrostatic model that took into account the formation of two complexes at the edge sites of the clay. Although the use of a two-site model slightly improved the fit of data at a pH below 4, the simpler one-site model reproduced satisfactorily all the sorption data from pH 3 to 8. The complexation constants obtained by fitting sorption data of the individual minerals were incorporated into a model to predict the adsorption of selenium in the illite/smectite mixtures; the model's predictions were consistent with the experimental adsorption data.
