Investigation of some thermo-mechanical and dielectric properties in multi-component chalcogenide glasses of Se–Te–Sn–Ag quaternary system

The study of dielectric behaviour and a.c. conduction of amorphous materials like chalcogenide glasses is expected to reveal structural information which, in effect, can be useful for the understanding of the conduction mechanism as well. This script presents our novel work on recently synthesized multi-component glasses of quaternary Se78 − xTe20Sn2Cdx (0 ≤ x ≤ 6) system. Particularly, we have investigated the dielectric properties of these electronic materials. We have analyzed the temperature/frequency dependence of dielectric constant (e′), dielectric loss (e″) and a.c. conductivity in audible frequency range (1 kHz–1 MHz). The composition dependence of these parameters is also discussed.

The glass transition phenomenon is guided by the swift cooling of a melt (glass-forming liquid) Consequently, the glass as a final product consists of a considerable number of micro-voids having the size of the order of atomic and/or molecular sizes The model of free volume fluctuation helps in describing the diverse physico-chemical properties of amorphous materials (like glasses and polymers) This theory is based on the fraction of fluctuation free frozen at the glass transition temperature and it forms a basis for determination of various significant thermo-mechanical properties In the present work, Vickers hardness test method is employed that provides useful information concerning the mechanical behavior of brittle solids The present work emphasizes the results of micro-indentation measurements on recently synthesized novel Se78−x

Thermo-physical properties of multi-component Se78−xTe20Sn2Pbx chalcogenide glasses


 We have performed hardness measurement experiments under different loads and loading times by performing micro-indentation marks in the present work. Chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) comprising Se78Te20Sn2 and Se78-xTe20Sn2Znx (where x = 0, 2, 4, & 6) alloys are the subject of micro-indentation tests in this work. We have utilized both micro-indentation and optical microscopic methods to determine Vickers hardness. Thermal glass transition phenomena have been identified through DSC techniques. The modulus of elasticity (E), an essential mechanical property, has been evaluated using established empirical equations. Further, we have studied other mechanical parameters [e.g., minimal micro-void formation energy (Eh), glass's fragility index (m), micro-void volume (Vh), etc.] and the covalent character of the glassy system. Additionally, various physical parameters, including density, molar volume, and compactness, have also been determined.

We report an analysis on the hardness behavior of glassy Se80–xTe20Snx alloy. The crucial thermo-mechanical parameters (micro-hardness, volume and formation energy of micro-voids and the modulus of elasticity) are examined. The results indicate that the thermo-mechanical parameters are changed significantly after incorporation of Sn in glassy Se80Te20 alloy.
