A set of 61 ion polarizabilities has been derived from the dielectric constants of 129 oxides and 25 fluorides using a least squares refinement technique in conjunction with the Clausius–Mosotti equation. These polarizabilities can be used to estimate mean dielectric constants of ‘‘well‐behaved’’ compounds. They should be particularly useful in calculation of mean dielectric constants of compounds whose dielectric constants have not been determined. They can also be used as a framework for distinguishing unusual dielectric behavior from normal dielectric behavior where deviations can frequently be attributed to piezo‐ or ferroelectricity, conductivity (ionic or electronic), ‘‘rattling’’ or ‘‘compressed’’ cations with correspondingly high or low polarizabilities, or the presence of dipolar impurities. Deviations observed from calculated dielectric constants can be used to search for unusual physical behavior.

All 17 infrared lattice modes for yttrium aluminum, yttrium gallium, and yttrium iron garnets Y3R2(RO4)3 are obtained from single‐crystal reflection and absorption spectroscopy, and the powder technique. Assignments for 12 modes are firmly establish based on chemical substitution among these garnets and within related series. Frequencies of the modes associated with translation of yttrium are nearly constant across the series. Frequencies of all other modes decrease quasilinearly as cell volume increases. Values the high and low frequency dielectric constants are in good agreement with independent measurements; also, the Lyddane–Sachs–Teller relationship was found to hold. Calculations of bulk moduli from vibrational spectra using a modification of Brout’s formula linearly correlate with experimental values for KT.

Infrared spectroscopy of yttrium aluminum, yttrium gallium, and yttrium iron garnets

The dielectric constants of rare-earth oxides (RE2O3) and rare-earth nitrides, phos- phides, arsenides, and antimonides (REX, RE = rare-earth element, X = N, P, As, Sb) are quantitatively estimated. The estimation is based on the approximately linear relationship between the dielectric constant and the atomic number of the constituent atoms. Similar correlations are valid in nearly all series of related compounds; thus the approach presented here can be used as an effective tool in the search for materials with specific properties, e.g. high dielectric constants.

The dielectric constants (kappa[script ']) and dielectric loss values of 10 rare-earth gallium garnets and 1 rare-earth aluminum garnet were measured at 1 MHz using a two-terminal method with empirically determined edge corrections. The results are: kappa[script '](Dy3Al5O12)=11.07±0.05; kappa[script '](Ho3Ga5O12) =12.38±0.05; kappa[script '](Dy3Ga5O12)=12.36±0.06; kappa[script '](Tb3Ga5O12) =12.40 ±0.03; kappa[script '](Gd3Ga5O12) =12.18±0.10; kappa[script '](Eu3Ga5O12) =12.46±0.05; kappa[script '](Sm3Ga5O12) =12.55±0.03; kappa[script '](Nd3Ga5O12) =12.59±0.12; kappa[script '](Y3Sc2Ga3O12) =12.94±0.03; kappa[script '](Sm3Sc2Ga3O12) =13.67±0.04; and kappa[script '](La2.66Lu2.66Ga2.66O12) =14.40±0.03. The dielectric polarizability of Ga2O3 derived from the dielectric constants of these and other Ga compounds is 8.80±0.14 A3. The agreement between measured dielectric polarizabilities as determined from the Clausius–Mosotti equation and those calculated from the sum of oxide polarizabilities according to alphaD(mineral) =SigmaalphaD (oxides) for six aluminum garnets and twelve gallium garnets is ~1%.
