Our objective was to determine the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of CP and AA in soybean meal (SBM) and canola, cotton, and sunfl ower products fed to fipigs. Each of 8 barrows (aver- age initial BW = 106.6 ± 5.5 kg) were surgically fi tted with a T-cannula in the distal ileum. Pigs were allotted to an 8 × 8 Latin square design with 8 diets and 8 peri- ods. The 7 protein ingredients were canola seeds (CS), canola meal (CM), cottonseed meal (CSM), sunfl ower seeds (SFS), sunfl ower meal (SFM), dehulled sunfl ow- er meal (SFM-DH), and SBM, with each ingredient included as the sole source of AA in the diet. A N-free diet was used to estimate basal endogenous losses of AA. Among tested ingredients, SBM had the greatest (P < 0.05) SID of Lys, and CS had the least (P < 0.05) SID of Phe, Thr, and Tyr. The SID of all indispensable AA except Trp was less (P < 0.05) in CS than SBM, and CM had a greater (P < 0.05) SID of all indispensable AA except Arg, His, Lys, and Trp than CS. However, the SID of all indispensable AA except Arg and Trp were less (P < 0.05) in CM than in SBM. The SID of all indispensable AA except Arg and Trp also were less (P < 0.05) in CSM than in SBM, and the SID of Met was less (P < 0.05) in CSM than in all other ingredients. Among sunfl ower products, the SID of His, Leu, Phe, and Thr were less (P < 0.05) in SFM-DH than in SFS and SFM, and the SID of Ile, Met, and Val were less (P < 0.05) in SFM-DH than in SFS; however, for CP, Arg, Lys, and Trp, no differences among SFS, SFM, and SFM-DH were observed. The SID of all indispensable AA except Trp were less (P < 0.05) in SFM-DH than SBM, and the SID of His, Ile, Lys, Thr, and Val in SFM were also less (P < 0.05) than in SBM. Except for Lys, no differences between SBM and SFS were observed. In conclusion, the SID of most AA in CS, CM, CSM, SFM, and SFM-DH are less than in SBM.

Amino acid digestibility in canola, cottonseed, and sunflower products fed to finishing pigs.

Objective The objective was to determine standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in 11 plant protein sources fed to growing pigs. Methods Eleven feed ingredients used were sesame meal, two sources of soybean meal (SBM) produced in the Republic of Korea, a source of SBM produced in India, high-protein distillers dried grains (HPDDG), perilla meal, canola meal, copra meal, corn germ meal, palm kernel expeller, and tapioca distillers dried grains (TDDG). Experimental diets were prepared to contain each test ingredient as a sole source of AA, and a nitrogen-free diet was also prepared to estimate the basal ileal endogenous losses of AA. Twelve barrows surgically fitted with T-cannulas the distal ileum with an initial body weight of 29.0 kg (standard deviation = 3.0) were individually housed in metabolism crates equipped with a feeder and a nipple drinker. A 12 × 9 incomplete Latin square design was employed with 12 experimental diets, 12 animals, and 9 periods. After a 5-d adaptation period, ileal digesta were collected on d 6 and 7 in each experimental period. Results Values for apparent ileal digestibility of most indispensable AA in three sources of SBM were greater compared with other test ingredients except HPDDG and canola meal (p<0.05). Pigs fed diets containing SBM sources had also greater SID of most indispensable AA compared with those fed diets containing other test ingredients (p<0.05) except for HPDDG and canola meal. There was no difference in the apparent ileal digestibility and SID of AA among sources of SBM. The TDDG had the least value for the SID of methionine among test ingredients (p<0.05). Conclusion Standardized ileal digestibility of most amino acids in soybean meal, high-protein distillers dried grains, and canola meal were greater than those in sesame meal, perilla meal, copra meal, and tapioca distillers dried grains.

This study was conducted to determine the coefficient of total tract standardized digestibility (CTTSD) of phosphorus (P) in oilseed meals and distillers dried grains (DDG) fed to growing-finishing pigs. Twelve barrows (initial bodyweight (BW) standard deviation, 52.25 +/- 2.57 kg) were allocated individually to metabolism cages. The experimental design was a 12 x 8 incomplete Latin square with 12 dietary treatments and eight replication periods. The diets were formulated individually with dehulled soybean meal produced in Korea (SBM-KD), soybean meal produced in India (SBM-I), soybean meal produced in Korea (SBM-K), corn high-protein distiller dried grains (HPDDGs), tapioca distillers dried grains (TDDG), canola meal (CAM), corn germ meal (CGM), copra meal (CM), palm kernel meal (PKM), sesame meal (SM), perilla meal (PM), and a P-free diet. Intake of P was highest in SM and PM. Excretion of P was reduced in y ascending order as HPDDG, TDDG and CGM; SBM-K; and SM and PM. The CTTAD of P was higher in CGM than SBM-K, TDDG, SM and PM. HPDDG and CGM showed greater CTTSD of P than SBM-K, CAM and PM. Digestible concentration of P on CTTSD (CTTSD-P) of P was greater in PM and CAM than the others except for SBM-KD. In summary, PM could be utilized as an alternative feedstuff to SBM, but its usage is regarded only as a source of P. In addition, the results of the current study would provide valuable information for formulating pig feed with precise P utilization in ingredients using mixed diets

Coefficient of standardized total tract digestibility of phosphorus in oilseed meals and distillers dried grains in growing-finishing pigs

A total of 60 crossbred pigs (Yorkshire × Duroc, initially 56.5 kg) were used in a 42-day trial to evaluate the effect of replacing a commercial high protein supplement with soybean meal and/or a base mix in rice bran-based diets on pig growth performance. Pigs were allotted to pens by body weight and pens were randomly assigned to dietary treatments in completely randomized design. There were 4 dietary treatments with 3 or 4 replicate pens per treatment and 4 pigs per pen. Dietary treatments were: 1) 80% rice bran with 20% high protein supplement (RBS20), 2) 95% rice bran with 5% high protein supplement (RBS5), 3) 97.5% rice bran with 2.5% base mix (RBB2.5), and 4) 92.5% rice bran with 5% soybean meal and 2.5% base mix (RBSBB). The base mix included vitamins, macro and trace minerals, L-Lysine, L-Threonine, and DL-Methionine. Overall (d 0 to 42) average daily gain was greater (P < 0.001) for pigs fed RBSBB and RBS20 diets than pigs fed the RBS5 or RBB2.5 diets. Pigs fed the RBS5 diet had reduced (P < 0.004) average daily feed intake compared to all other treatments. Similarly, feed efficiency (feed/gain) was improved (P < 0.004) for pigs fed RBSBB and RBS20 diets compared with pigs fed RBS5 or RBB2.5. For economics, income over feed cost was the greatest (P < 0.01) for the diet containing soybean meal and base mix compared to pigs fed the RBS20 diet, SBS5, and RBB2.5. In conclusion, feeding pigs a rice bran diet with base mix and soybean meal had similar growth performance and increased economic return compared to feeding a rice bran diet with high protein supplement. Use of soybean meal and base mix provides an opportunity for increased economic return for pig farmers.
