Karangasem region is the lowest income region in Bali Province-Indonesia. The people are highly dependent on using motorcycle for their daily movement. Karangasem has a high fatality rate of traffic accidents. There are 190 cases of the traffic accident and causing the death of 140 people. The number of accidents involving motorcycles are 172 cases. The objective of this study is to investigate factors that influence fatal traffic accidents involving motorcycles. This study used traffic accident data over 6 years period from 2007-2012 and applied logistic regression. It was found that there are four variable significantly affect accident fatality at 95% confidence level, i.e. accident location, collision type, violation type, and age.

An investigation into the ability of transport initiatives to change commuter travel mode choices

Motorization is becoming an issue of concerns for urban governments and citizens in Indonesian cities, including in Bali Province. The cities in Bali Province have not been served well by public transport services. Bali consists of 9 regions and this study focused on a typical low income region in Bali i.e. Tabanan Region as a case study. One way to measure public transport service quality is by measuring accessibility to public transport routes. The objective of this study is to investigate the accessibility of residents to public transport services in Tabanan Region. Accessibility to public transport services in Tabanan Region was analyzed based on travel distance and travel time to reach the closest public transport routes. Based on Z-score diagram, it was found that six zones were in quadrant A which means that these zones were in high accessibility category (Bongan, Gubug, DauhPeken, DelodPeken, DajanPeken and Denbatas. On the other hand, five zones were identified in quadrant D. These zones (Sudimara, Subamia, Buahan, Tunjuk and Wanasari) have a low accessibility values to reach public transport routes. Therefore, improvement of infrastructures and public transport services need to prioritize these five zones with low accessibility values.

Accessibility to public transport services (case study of tabanan region, bali-indonesia)

Motorcycle provides several positive aspects in providing mobility, but its rapid increase in ownership and usage should be anticipated. The West Java Province has the highest number of population in Indonesia, which is potential to have the highest number of motorcycle. This study aims to develop a prediction model of motorcycle number and to develop a model of motorcycle ownership. Two models are proposed to predict the motorcycle growth in West Java, with gross regional domestic product and number of population as the independent variables. Four ordered probit models are proposed to explain motorcycle ownership in Bandung City based on economic, personal, user’s travel behavior, and motorcycle characteristics. This study explains that the increase of motorcycle ownership was not influenced by economic condition only, but also by travel behavior and their activity. Thus, besides economic aspects, the anticipation should also be based on travel and activity changes of the user.
