IntroductionThe LVDdetector[11 can be defined as an under-groundobservatory with the main objectives of study-ing neutrinos from stellar collapse and searching forpoint-like sources of gammas and neutrinos of veryhigh energy. This multipurpose apparatus is being in-stalled in hall Aofthe Gran Sasso Laboratory [21 at avertical depth of 3600 m.w.e. It consists of a largevolume of liquid scintillator divided into modules andofa tracking system madeof layers ofstreamertubes.The detectordesignfulfils the following aims:- the study ofthe neutrino interactions inside thedetectorwithenergymeasurementfor low-energyneu-trino interactions, and patternidentification for higherenergyevents;- the detectionofpassing muonswith track recon-struction, up-down discrimination and time of flightmeasurement.The apparatus consists of 190 basically identicalmodules. Each module comprises 9.6 t ofliquid scintil-lator divided into eight modular counters and an L-shaped tracking chamber, containing adouble layer ofstreamer tubes andfacingthe bottom andone verticalside ofthemodule. Plastic streamer tubes are investigated with the aim to improve the operation stability and the response of the strips placed above and below the chambers. If negative HV is applied to the profile, a deterioration of the strip response and a shift toward higher values of the voltage plateau compared with the case of applying positive HV to the wire, is observed. This is explained by the influence of the cover resistivity on the electric field in the tube. Stable operation and low-voltage plateau is observed when using various dielectric materials with low resistivity ( 10 11 –10 12 Ω cm ) as a cover material.

Studies of electrodeless streamer tube properties for the KASCADE experiment

A large area streamer tube detector, located within the KASCADE experiment, has been built with the aim to identify muons and their directions from extensive air showers by track measurements under more than 18 r.l. shielding. 1000 streamer tube chambers of 4 m length have been produced and tested. The detector concept is presented. The influence of the design and operational factors on the detector performance are shown. Various approaches to determine the angular resolution of the muon tracking detector are discussed. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
