Bismuth (Bi)‐based materials merit high theoretical volumetric specific capacity (3800 mAh mL⁻1) but suffer from huge volume variations and sluggish reaction kinetics during cycling. Herein, the optimal framework of Bi/Bi2O3 nanodots enriched in suitable outer amorphous carbon sheets (Bi/Bi2O3 NDs@CSs) is first proposed to alleviate volume variations and accelerate stable charge transport to boost K+ storage performance. The introduction of proper Bi2O3 not only provides an efficient K+ adsorption path, but also effectively buffers volume changes via conversion reaction. Accordingly, the as‐prepared anode exhibits a remarkable rate capability (149.3 mAh g−1 at 60 A g−1, 42% capacity retention with a 120‐fold current‐density increase) and extraordinary durability (1800 cycles at 5.0 A g−1, 95% capacity retention), among the best rate and cycling performance to date in potassium ion batteries (PIBs) anodes. Theoretical calculations reveal the feasible structures of Bi/Bi2O3 NDs@CSs with double protection of carbon sheets and Bi2O3 are conducive to enhance charge transfer and efficiency of electrochemical reaction. Substantial in situ/ex situ characterizations and finite element simulation further unveil high reversibility and robust mechanical behavior of Bi/Bi2O3 NDs@CSs, favorable for the reinforcement of structural stability. This study provides new insights into developing high‐performance and durable Bi‐based anodes for PIBs.

Fast and Long‐Lasting Potassium‐Ion Storage Enabled by Rationally Engineering Strain‐Relaxation Bi/Bi2O3 Nanodots Embedded in Carbon Sheets

Red phosphorus (P) as an anode material of potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) possesses ultra-high theoretical specific capacity (1154 mAh g-1 ). However, owing to residual white P during the preparation and sluggish kinetics of K-P alloying limit its practical application. Seeking an efficient catalyst to address above problems is crucial for secure preparation of red P anode with high performance. Herein, through the analysis of the activation energies in white P polymerization, it is revealed that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy of I2 (-7.40 eV) is in proximity to P4 (-7.25 eV), and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy of I2 molecule (-4.20 eV) is lower than that of other common non-metallic molecules (N2 , S8 , Se8 , F2 , Cl2 , Br2 ). The introduction of I2 can thus promote the breaking of P-P bond and accelerate the polymerization of white P molecules. Besides, the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations show the I2 can enhance the kinetics of P-K alloying. The as-obtained red P/C composites with I2 deliver excellent cycling stability (358 mAh g-1 after 1200 cycles at 1 A g-1 ). Simultaneous Catalytic Acceleration of White Phosphorus Polymerization And Red Phosphorus Potassiation for High-Performance Potassium-Ion Batteries.

Designing Sb/carbon composite is an effective strategy to enhance the cycle stability and rate capability of Sb anodes for sodium ion batteries. However, the introduction of carbon often leads to a loss in specific capacity and initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). In this work, a new perspective is adopted by focusing on improving the “sloping capacity” contribution of carbon (C) in Sb/C composites, rather than solely increasing the platform capacity of Sb as traditionally done. Theoretical predictions indicate that constructing Sb/C composites with high Sb and carbon interfacial areas can provide more Na adsorption sites, thus enhancing the “sloping capacity” of amorphous carbon. Guided by DFT, a rational Sb/C/NSCDs‐2(N) is successfully developed by self‐embedding Sb nanodots into 2D‐amorphous carbon sheets doped with N/S. Sb/C/NSCDs‐2(N) exhibits abundant Sb/carbon interfacial areas and excellent nanoscale effects, demonstrating ideal electrochemical sodium storage performances. Impressively, the Sb/C/NSCDs‐2(N) provides a “sloping capacity” close to 160 mAh g−1. Significantly, owing to the fact that these interfaces and defects are not in direct contact with the electrolyte, the side reaction of electrolyte is effectively inhibited, leading to no decrease of ICE.

Constructing Rich Interfacial Structure by Carbon Dots to Improve the Sodium Storage Capacity of Sb/C Composite

Bismuth (Bi) possesses an ultrahigh theoretical volume capacity (3800 mAh cm−3) and low embedding potential stimulated considerable attention as anodes for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). However, its practical application is still hampered by the huge volume variation during the charge/discharge process. To settle this issue, Bi@C nanosheet arrays (Bi@C‐NSA) are fabricated on copper foam via a facile galvanic replacement followed by in situ polymerization of dopamine and an annealing procedure. The carbon‐coated nanosheet array structure not only accommodates the volume expansion during cycling and maintains electrode stability, but also facilitates rapid electron/ion transport. Due to the unique structural design, this Bi@C‐NSA exhibits an impressive capacity of 315.72 mAh g−1 after 1500 cycles under 1 A g−1. Furthermore, a series of in situ/ex situ techniques reveal that this Bi@C‐NSA possesses superior reaction kinetics and undergoes a typical alloying/dealloying storage mechanism. Furthermore, Bi@C‐NSA also achieves commendable reversible capacity and cycling stability in a wide temperature range (0 °C–60 °C). Notably, the assembled Na3V2(PO4)3//Bi@C‐NSA full cell demonstrates a capacity of 325 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles at 0.05 A g−1, which promises for practical applications. This galvanic replacement strategy spearheads a way to prepare nanoarray electrodes and will accelerate the development of sodium‐ion batteries.

Facile Galvanic Replacement Construction of Bi@C Nanosheets Array as Binder‐Free Anodes for Superior Sodium‐Ion Batteries

The inferior cycling stabilities or low capacities of two-dimensional (2D) Sb or Bi limit their practical applications in high-capacity and long-stability potassium/lithium ion batteries (PIBs/LIBs). Therefore, integrating the synergy of high-capacity Sb and high-stability Bi to fabricate 2D binary alloys is an intriguing and challenging endeavor. Herein, a series of novel 2D binary SbBi alloys with different atomic ratios are fabricated using a simple one-step co-replacement method. Among these fabricated alloys, 2D-Sb0.6 Bi0.4 anode exhibits high-capacity and ultra-stable potassium and lithium storage performance. Particularly, 2D-Sb0.6 Bi0.4 anode remains a high-stability capacity of 381.1 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 (∼87.8% retention) and an ultra-long-cycling stability of 1000 cycles (only 0.037% decay per cycle) at 1.0 A g-1 in PIBs. Besides, the superior lithium and potassium storage mechanism was revealed by kinetic analysis, in-situ/ex-situ characterization techniques, and DFT theoretical calculations. This mainly originates from the ultra-stable structure and synergistic interaction within 2D-binary alloy, which significantly alleviates the volume expansion, enhances K+ adsorption energy and decreases K+ diffusion energy barrier compared to individual 2D-Bi or 2D-Sb. This study verifies a new scalable design strategy for creating 2D binary (even ternary) alloys, offering valuable insights into their fundamental mechanisms in rechargeable batteries. Novel Ultra-Stable Two-Dimensional SbBi Alloy Structure with Precise Regulation Ratio Enables Long-Stable Potassium/Lithium ion Storage.

Metallic Bi, as an alloying-type anode material, has demonstrated tremendous potential for practical application of potassium-ion batteries. However, the giant volume expansion, severe structure pulverization, and sluggish dynamics of Bi-based materials result in unsatisfied rate performance and unstable cycling stability. Here, 2D bismuth@N-doped carbon sheets with BiOC bond and internal void space (2D Bi@NOC) are successfully fabricated via a self-template strategy to address these issues, which own ultrafast electrochemical kinetics and impressive long-term cycling stability for delivering an admirable capacity of 341.7 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 10 A g-1 and impressive rate capability of 220.6 mAh g-1 at 50 A g-1 . Particularly, the in situ transmission electron microscopy observations visualize the real-time alloying/dealloying process and reveal that plastic carbon shell and void space can availably relieve dramatic volume stress and powerfully maintain structural integrity. Density functional theory calculation and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy test certify that the robust BiOC bond is thermodynamically and kinetically beneficial for adsorption/diffusion of K+ . This work will light on designing advanced high-performance energy materials and provide important evidence for understanding the energy storage mechanism of alloy-based materials.

2D Bismuth@N-Doped Carbon Sheets for Ultrahigh Rate and Stable Potassium Storage.

As the most promising candidate for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is highly dependent on the electrode materials. Copper selenides have established themselves as potential anode materials for SIBs due to their high theoretical capacity and good conductivity. However, the poor rate performance and fast capacity fading are the major challenges to their practical application in SIBs. Herein, single-crystalline CuSe2 nanocubes (CuSe2 NCs) are successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. As an anode of SIBs, the CuSe2 NCs render an almost 100% initial Coulombic efficiency, an outstanding long cycle life, e.g., 380 mA h g-1 after 1700 cycles at 10 A g-1, and an unprecedented rate performance of 344 mA h g-1 at 50 A g-1. Ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns reveal the crystalline transformation of energy-storage materials, and the density functional theory (DFT) conclusion suggests that fast and stable ion diffusion kinetics enhances their electrochemical performance upon sodiation/desodiaton. The investigation into the mechanism provides a theoretical basis for subsequent practical applications.
