It is indispensable to develop wide-band-gap based ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs), which are one of the basic building blocks of solid state UV optoelectronic devices. In the last two decades, we have witnessed the renaissance of ZnO as a wide-band-gap semiconductor and an enormous development of ZnO-based UV PDs as a result of its superb optical and electronic properties. Since the first demonstration, a great variety of UV PDs based on ZnO and its related materials have been proposed and demonstrated. These PDs, with diverse device geometries, exhibit either high performance or multiple functions, reflecting a state-of-the-art technology of UV optoelectronics. In this review, we study the latest progress of UV PDs made on ZnO and MgxZn1−xO, which is a representative alloy of ZnO for band-gap engineering techniques. The discussion focuses on the device performance and the behind device physics according to the architecture of UV PDs.

Semiconductor ultraviolet photodetectors based on ZnO and MgxZn1−xO

The relation between anxious personality traits and fear generalization in healthy subjects : A systematic review and meta-analysis

Many meta-analyses and systematic reviews have tried to assess the efficacy of animal-assisted interventions (AAIs), reaching inconsistent conclusions. The present work posits a critical exploration of the current literature, using some recent meta-analyses to exemplify the presence of unattended threats. The present comment illustrates that the field (1) comprehends inconsistencies regarding the terms and definitions of AAIs; (2) pays more attention to the characteristics of the animals than to the action mechanisms of AAIs; (3) does not provide a clear connection between anthrozoology (how humans and non-human animals interact in communities), benefits of the human-animal interaction (HAI), and the design of AAIs; and (4) implicitly reinforces these phenomena through research designs. Thus, some conclusions extracted from these meta-analyses need further discussion. Increasing the internal validity of AAIs in empirical studies is an urgent task, which can be addressed by (1) developing a better understanding of how anthrozoology, the HAI, and AAIs relate to each other; (2) highlighting the mechanisms that explain the results in an empirical and specific way; and (3) changing the design of interventions, adopting a component-centered approach, and focusing on the incremental efficacy and efficiency of AAI programs.

Current Status of Animal-Assisted Interventions in Scientific Literature: A Critical Comment on Their Internal Validity

Pictures are commonly used to represent problems. However, it is unclear how the addition of pictures affects students’ problem-solving performance. The multimedia effect in problem solving describes the phenomenon whereby an individual’s problem-solving performance is enhanced when equivalent pictures are added to illustrate or replace part of the problem text. Using meta-analytic techniques, this study sought to determine the overall size of the multimedia effect in problem solving and the possible boundary conditions (k = 51; N = 38,987; Range n = 10 – 31,842; Median n = 63). The results showed a significant small-to-medium multimedia effect size on response accuracy (Hedges’s g = 0.32) and a significant medium-to-large multimedia effect size on students’ response certainty (Hedges’s g = 0.74), but no significant multimedia effect on response time. The results for the effects of decorative pictures were not sufficient for a reliable interpretation. Representational (Hedges’s g = 0.24) and organizational (Hedges’s g = 0.52) pictures had a significant and positive impact on response accuracy, but informational or multiple pictures across studies did not have a significant aggregate effect on an individual’s response accuracy. These findings suggest that the multimedia effect in problem solving is diverse and limited by multiple boundary conditions. Further primary studies are needed to further investigate the multimedia effect in problem solving.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: Multimedia Effect in Problem Solving: a Meta-analysis

Mg-doped (≤15at%) ZnO thin films were prepared on quartz glass substrates by sol-gel method using a spinning-techniques. The films were charactered by X-ray diffraction , UV Vis-NIR double beam spectrophotometer and a SHIMADZU fluorespectrometer. It was found that optimally crystallized when the Mg concentration is 9at% were obtained. A photoluminescence study at room temperature revealed a blue shift in the near band edge emission peak with increasing of Mg content , which is agreement with the observation from the optical transmittance measurement. The photoconductive UV detectors based on these films were investigated, and the result showed that highest response was obtained from the photodecters fabricated by films with 15at% Mg concentration.
