Wahlt man als Beurteilungskriterium den Sozialhilfebezug, so ist von 910.000 Kindern zwischen 0 und 14 Jahren und von 236.000 Jugendlichen zwischen 15 und 20 Jahren auszugehen. Auch in Deutschland ist der Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer Benachteiligung und schlechterer Gesundheit inzwischen fur Sterblichkeit, fur Krankheitshaufigkeit und -schwere sowie fur gesundheitsrelevante Verhaltensweisen und Inanspruchnahme arztlicher Versorgung einschlieslich Vorsorge- und Fruherkennungsuntersuchungen belegt. Welche Ansatzpunkte sich fur Interventionen ergeben, wird zusammengefasst anhand eines Erklarungsmodells fur den Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer Ungleichheit und Gesundheit, einer aktuellen Literaturubersicht uber Interventionsstudien und interventionsbegleitende Studien bei sozial benachteiligten Kindern und Jugendlichen in Westeuropa und den bestehenden Projektubersichten in Deutschland.Angesichts unterschiedlicher nationaler und internationaler Aktivitaten wird als geeignete politische Strategie die Nutzung vorhandener Erfahrungen, ein koordinierter sektorenubergreifender Einsatz von Masnahmen mit nachgewiesener oder abschatzbarer Wirksamkeit und die Verbesserung der wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen empfohlen.Die Bundeszentrale fur gesundheitliche Aufklarung (BzGA) wird hierzu ab 2003 eine Internetplattform anbieten.

Social inequality in health is one of the most challenging of problems for all Public Health services. Health reports and the development of guidelines in this area are very demanding tasks. Based on the latest academic research on tackling inequalities in health, the article shows how two German cities, Potsdam and Hamburg, started to place inequality in children's health on the public agenda. With reference to research and public health policy in the Netherlands, the authors propose that the German local health departments develop similar methods of intervention in cooperation with all relevant partners in the health and social services.
