A calculation model (the Fictitious Crack Model), based on fracture mechanics and the finite element method, 1s presented. In the model the fracture zone in front of a crack is represented by a fictitious crack that 1s able to transfer stress. The stress transferring capability of the fictitious crack normally decreases when the crack width increases. The applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics to concrete and similar materials is analysed by use of the Fictitious Crack Model. It" Is found that linear elastic fracture mechanics 1s too dependent on, among other things, specimen dimensions to be useful as a fracture approach, unless the dimensions, for concrete structures, are in order of meters. The usefulness of the J-integral, the COD-approach and the R-curve analysis is also found to be very limited where cementitious materials are concerned. The complete tensile stress-strain curve is introduced as a fracture mechanical parameter. The curve can be approximatively determined if the tensile strength, the Young's modius and the fracture energy are known. Crack growth and development of fracture zones in plain concrete and similar materials

Processes taking place in a certain region near a crack-tip play a dominant part for the initial growth of the crack. This region, called the end-region , is generally very small, and its state at the critical load is a material property. Outside the end-region, the material can be treated as a continuum, in which therefore d σ ij d e ij ⩾0. The state of the end-region is described by the value of the Rice integral J , which is a monotonic function of the load. When J reaches a critical value J c , the crack starts to grow. In the case of unstable growth, the criterion J = J c is also one of fracture. J may be determined very accurately, even in cases of large-scale yielding, by finite-element methods, without detailed knowledge of the situation near the crack-tip. The critical value J c may then be found by experiment. Thus, a non-linear fracture mechanics theory can be formulated.

The foundations of fracture mechanics

A crack model is introduced in which the non-linear force-deformation relation, just ahead of the crack tip, is taken into account. The analysis of the crack model leads to an integral equation of the Fredholm type, which is solved numerically by approximating it by a finite system of linear equations. The distributions of stress and deformation are calculated for different loads increasing from zero to the maximum value of stable equilibrium. The conditions, for which instability is reached, are also determined by investigating the eigenvalues of the system. Comparison of the results with existing theories is made.
