This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of preharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, Harvista TM ) and postharvest 1-MCP (SmartFresh TM ) treatments on the fruit quaitly attributes of codl-stored F‘u (i’j Malus domestica Borkh.) apples. Fruits were exposed to 0, 95, 125, or 250 mg ･L -1 Harvista TM at 3, 2, 1 weeks before harvest (WBH), and treated with 0 or 1 μL･L -1 SmartFresh TM at harvest. Fruit was then stored for up to 180 days at 0 ± 1°C. Fruit fresh weight, Hunter’s value a, internal ethylene concentration (IEC), flesh firmness, titratable acidity (TA), and soluble solids content (SSC) in fruit treated with H arvista TM were not different from those of control fruit at harvest. During cold storage, flesh firmness and TA were higher in fruit trea ted with 250 mg･L -1 Harvista TM at 2 and 3 WBH than in control fruit. IEC was 5.5-10.0% lower in fruit treated with 250 mg ･L -1 Harvista TM at 2 and 3 WBH compared with control fruit as storage duration progressed, while SSC was not affected. Effect of Preharvest and Postharvest 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) Treatments on Fruit Quality Attributes in Cold-stored 'Fuji' Apples

1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), a gaseous inhibitor of ethylene action, has been widely used in horticultural crops to maintain quality, especially for long-term storage. In fruits, 1-MCP treatment reduces ethylene evolution, softening, color change, and flavor production, thus preserving product quality. The treatment also reduces the incidence of physiological disorders induced during refrigerated storage of many fruits and vegetables. Recent studies of 1-MCP treatments on various horticultural produce provided precious information that can expand the potential of commercial utilization. Under various treatment conditions, different responses to 1-MCP treatments were elucidated according to crops, cultivars, and harvest maturity. At present in Korea, however, commercial use of 1-MCP is limited to apple industry. The limit of commercial use of 1-MCP may be mainly due to different responses to the treatment by harvest maturity and storage conditions. Besides, diverse postharvest programs according to the period of storage require more specific treatment conditions such as concentration, temperature and the duration of treatment. In the present review, relatively recent research results were summarized and, based on the findings, future tasks were proposed to expand commercial usefulness of 1-MCP treatment in more horticultural commodities.

1-MCP application for horticultural commodities in Korea: Practical potential and future task

‘감홍’ 사과의 수확후 1-MCP 처리, CA 저장 및 유통온도가 모의 수출과정 중 품질유지에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 사과는 장기저장에 적합한 성숙도에서 수확하여 1μL·L-1 농도의 1-MCP 처리 후 0℃ 저온(air)과 O2 1.5kPa + CO2 2.5kPa CA 환경에서 각각 6개월간 저장하였다. 저장 후 모의 수출과정은 0℃에서 2주간의 해상 운송 모의 과정을 거쳤으며 현지 유통과정은 저온(7℃) 과 상온(18-22℃)에서 7일로 설정하였다. 20℃ 온도 평형 후 측정한 저장 직후 및 모의 운송 후 호흡속도와 에틸렌 발생률은 1-MCP 처리와 CA 저장 사과에서 유의적으로 낮았고 호흡속도의 경우 CA 저장의 효과가 보다 뚜렷하였다. 모의 수출과정 후 당도는 1-MCP 처리에서 산함량은 1-MCP 및 CA 저장 사과에서 뚜렷하게 높았다. 1-MCP 처리와 CA 저장은 모든 시점에서 과육 경도 및 조직감 유지에 뚜렷한 효과를 보였으며, 조사시점에 따라 상가효과가 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 현지에서의 저온유통은 과육 경도 유지에 효과적이었던 반면, 당도나 산함량에는 유의적인 영향을 미치지 않았다. 본 실험결과를 종합해보면, 수출을 목적으로 하는 ‘감홍’ 사과의 저장 한계기간은 무처리 사과의 저온저장 시 4개월 이내, 1-MCP 처리 후 CA 저장 시에는 6개월 이상까지 가능한 것으로 나타나, 국내 저장기간과 현지 유통기간에 따라 차별화된 수확 후관리기술 프로그램이 적용되어야 할 것으로 판단되었다.

‘Jonathan’ apples are relatively small size which contributes to enhancing fruit consumption and gaining popularity. Thus, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of AVG (aminoethoxyvinylglycine, ReTain®), sprayable 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene, Harvista), and fumigation 1-MCP (SmartFresh) applications on fruit quality attributes and storability in ‘Jonathan’ apple fruits during cold-stored. The Jonathan fruits were dipped with either ReTain (75 mg/L) or Harvista (125 mg/L) solutions for 5 min, or fumigated with SmartFresh (1 mg/L) for 18 hr before storage at 0±1°C for 75 days. Flesh firmness and titratable acidity remained higher in all pre-treated apples than control ones during cold storage period. Flesh firmness was higher for apples treated with ReTain and SmartFresh than samples treated with Harvista, while soluble solid content and respiration rate were not affected by sample pretreatment. Internal ethylene concentration (IEC) of all pretreated apples remained below about 4.5 μL/L during the entire storage period while that of control sample greatly increased to 10.29 μL/L. Ethylene production was much higher in control fruits than in treated ones during cold storage. These results indicated that ReTain and 1-MCP treatments would be considerably effective in retention of fruit quality attributes of ‘Jonathan’ apple during cold-stored.

Effects of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments on fruit quality attributes in cold-stored‘Jonathan’apples

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different concentrations (0.5 and 1 μL·L -1 ) and application times (0.5, 1, 0.5+0.5 and 1+1 μL·L -1 ) of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, SmartFresh TM ) treatment on post-harvest quality and cell wall metabolism of ‘Summer Prince’ and ‘Summer King’ apple fruit during cold storage. Compared with control fruit, 1-MCP treatments maintained higher flesh firmness and titratable acidity in both apple cultivars. In contrast, the soluble solids content did not show differences in all treatments. The internal ethylene concentration was higher in control fruit, but fruit with 1-MCP treatments expressed lower ethylene concentration. Weight loss in ‘Summer Prince’ fruit treated with 1-MCP was lower than in control fruit during storage. The starch index did not show differences in all treatments; on the other hand, greasiness or other storage disorders were not detected during storage. Both cultivars showed higher contents of total sugar and uronic acid in both 1-MCP treatments than the control. ‘Summer Prince’ apple had increased cell wall degrading enzyme activity of β-Gal, α-Gal, β-Glc, α-Man, and α-Ara enzymes after 4 months of storage in control fruit. Likewise, ‘Summer King’ apple had increased activity of β-Gal, β-Glc, β-Xyl, and α-Ara enzymes after 2 months of storage in the control fruit. Both cultivars showed lower cell wall degrading enzyme activities in 1-MCP treatments than in the control. In conclusion, 1-MCP treatment of ‘Summer Prince’ and ‘Summer King’ apple fruit was effective in maintaining quality by inhibiting internal ethylene and cell wall metabolism. However, the different concentrations and repeated applications of 1-MCP treatment were not different in this study.
