In this study, an iridium-oxide-layer-deposited Pt surface (IrOx–Pt) was explored as a catalyst for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EtOR) in an alkaline medium.

IrOx–Pt electrode for the electro-oxidation of ethanol in alkaline-type direct ethanol fuel cells: an excellent CO-tolerant catalyst

High-density AgTi2(PO4)3 as a solid electrolyte was synthesised by a high-temperature solid-state process. The optimal sintering temperature was determined to obtain the best structural and electrical performance. Based on the as-prepared AgTi2(PO4)3 fast-ion conductor, a new type of all-solid-state reference electrode was prepared, and its electrochemical properties, such as cyclic voltammetry curves and potentials at varying pH, were investigated. A pH sensor was designed by combining an AgTi2(PO4)3 reference electrode with an Ir/IrO2 pH electrode. This pH sensor exhibited a good linear response to pH values in aqueous solutions and simulated seawater samples. In addition, a metal ion sensor, comprising the as-fabricated solid-state reference electrode, a Pt counter electrode, and a glassy carbon working electrode, was employed to quantify Cu2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ concentrations using differential-pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. The resulting peak currents correlated with the metal ion concentrations and exhibited a low detection limit, good linearity, and wide detection range, which is suitable for performing chemical analysis in harsh marine environments. 

Synthesis, properties, and applications of all-solid-state reference electrode based on AgTi2(PO4)3

Monitoring the change of solution pH near the surface at the micrometer-millimeter scale and conducting material corrosion studies have become a hot topic nowadays. In this study, we evaluate the optimal experimental parameter combinations of iridium oxide pH electrodes prepared by electrochemical deposition, and investigate the response mechanism of iridium oxide electrodes by characterizing the surface morphology and composition before and after the response. The response rate and response error of the iridium oxide electrode were analyzed, and the reliability of the miniature iridium oxide electrode applied to pH monitoring in soil simulation fluids under dynamic stray current interference was verified. 

Preparation of an iridium oxide micro pH electrode and its response rate under dynamic stray current interference

As a key parameter, pH has received a lot of attention from the sensing perspective. New materials and technologies are being used to produce state of the art devices capable of tracking it. However, most generic sensors lack the applicability that certain applications require. In this article, 3D printing technology is used to its full potential to produce electrodes, which are modified into pH sensors and reference electrodes, with shapre‐driven additional functionality for monitoring ammonia recovery in a bioreactor. The 3D‐printed electrodes are modified with a layer of iridium oxide to be turned into pH sensitive devices. Their characterization showed their characteristic super‐Nernstian response (−77 ± 0.2 mV pH −1 ), high reproducibility (RSD &lt; 5%) between sensors and repeatability (RSD &lt; 2%) between measurements. Moreover, the sensors are stable for at least 20 days and tunable in length. All of this results in the sensors being built into a functional shape and tested to monitor the performance of an ammonia‐producing bioelectrochemical reactor.

Influence of surface roughness on the response time of iridium oxide pH sensors

pH measurement has received extensive attention from researchers in numerous fields including medical diagnostics agriculture, food industry, marine, and chemical engineering. Owing to their electrode stability, drift degree, and preparation process, iridium/iridium oxide electrodes are considered as the most promising candidate for pH detection under these conditions. In this study, iridium/iridium oxide electrodes were fabricated by thermal cycling oxidation method. The relationship between the electrode structure and performance was investigated and discussed. To study the influence of supercritical treatment, the as-prepared electrodes were treated at 35 MPa and 400 °C for 3 h. After examining their pH response, the supercritically treated electrodes exhibit better performance than the untreated iridium/iridium oxide electrodes. The structural changes of the treated electrodes were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammograms and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed the important changes in the iridium oxide film of the electrode after supercritical treatment, such as its morphology, chemical bond, valence state, and defects, which collaborated to achieve its improved performance.
