Optimisation of the anaerobic digestion of agricultural resources.

Minerals and organic matter (OM) may form intricate associations via myriad interactions. In soils, the associations of OM with mineral surfaces are mainly investigated because of their role in determining the long-term retention of OM. OM “must decay in order to release the energy and nutrients that drive live processes all over the planet” ( Janzen, 2006 ). Thus, the processes and mechanisms that retain OM in soil are a central concern to very different branches of environmental research. An agronomist may want to synchronize periods of high nutrient and energy release with the growth stages of a crop. An environmental chemist may wish to either immobilize an organic soil contaminant or enhance its decomposition into less harmful metabolites, while climate scientists need to understand the processes that mediate the production of potent greenhouse gases from decomposing OM. Associations of OM with pedogenic minerals (henceforth termed mineral–organic associations (MOAs)) are known to be key controls in these and many other processes. Here we strive to present an overview of the current knowledge on MOAs and identify key questions and future research needs.

Chapter One – Mineral–Organic Associations: Formation, Properties, and Relevance in Soil Environments

The experimental conditions were optimized for the synthesis of amorphous SiO2 particles by the reaction of neutralization of sodium silicate solution with H2SO4 solution Amorphous SiO2 particles were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDS and microelectrophoresis The amorphous peak was located at 2θ = 218o in the XRD pattern Primary SiO2 particles were ~ 15 to ~ 30 nm in size and they aggregated into bigger particles Amorphous SiO2 particles showed a specific surface area up to 130 m2g-1, dependent on the parameters of the precipitation process The EDS spectrum of amorphous SiO2 particles did not show contamination with sulfate or other ions, which cannot be excluded in traces pHzpc =17 was obtained by microelectrophoresis

Previous studies have shown that the dissolution alters the static intrinsic properties of mineral surfaces, such as changing the surface components or active sites, which in turn affects the floatability. In this work, the dissolution process of smithsonite with different particle sizes and its influence on the flotation behaviour were systematically investigated from a dynamic perspective of the dissolution of ions on the mineral surface. Micro-flotation experiments revealed the inhibition of the flotation of smithsonite during the early phases of dissolution, particularly in the case of the fine particle. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) tests, Inorganic carbon (IC) tests, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the early phases of the dissolution process of smithsonite exhibited a more rapid rate of zinc ions. However, as the dissolution progressed and a state of saturation was reached, the further dissolution of carbonate inhibited that of zinc ions. Subsequent adsorption measurements and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis illuminated the transformation in flotation behaviour resulting from the surface dissolution of smithsonite, primarily by affecting the stability of the adsorption of agents. The rapid dissolution rate of ions on the surface of smithsonite led to decreased adsorption stability of (sodium oleate) NaOL and diminished floatability. This phenomenon was particularly discernible on the surface of fine particle smithsonite. This investigation advances a novel mechanism for comprehending the impact of the surface dissolution processes on the flotation behaviour of smithsonite of different particle sizes, providing a theoretical and practical reference for the flotation of fine particles and marginally soluble minerals.
