Social anxiety among 110 stutterers was compared with the measures of two control groups (110 social phobic patients and 110 normal persons). Results do not support the notion of social anxiety as an essential part of stuttering.

Investigating stuttering as a prosodie disturbance points to an earlier hypothesis on speech behavior of stutterers. On the basis of clinical observations, the hypothesis has been put forth that the speech of stutterers is “monotonous” in the sense that it exhibits reduced pitch variability even in episodes free of stuttering (Scripture, 1925; Travis, 1927).

In this chapter we shall deal with the problem of speech dysfluencies, particularly stuttering, in interpersonal communication. We shall suggest that features of social situations and the communicative anxiety they generate in speakers have a major influence on various speech dysfluencies in general, and stuttering incidence in particular. We will also propose a preliminary model linking features of social situations through the mediating factors of communication responsibility and need for control to the occurrence of speech dysfluencies.
