Diagnosis of Pulmonary Infections in Immunocompromised Patients by Fiber-optic Bronchoscopy with Bronchoalveolar Lavage and Serology
Britt-Marie Eriksson,Helena Dahl,Fu-Zhang Wang,Kerstin Elvin,Gunnar Hillerdal,Monica Lundholm,Annika Linde,Elisabeth Olding-Stenkvist +7 more
TL;DR: D diagnosis was achieved more often in renal transplant patients than in patients with hematological malignancies, and it was not possible to relate findings of coagulase-negative staphylococci, alpha-streptococci and Candida albicans to the pulmonary infection.

Diagnosis of Cytomegalovirus in Bronchoalveolar Lavage by Polymerase Chain Reaction, in Comparison with Virus Isolation and Detection of Viral Antigen
Britt-Marie Eriksson,Maria Brytting,Benita Zweygberg-Wirgart,Gunnar Hillerdal,Elisabeth Olding-Stenkvist,Annika Linde +5 more
TL;DR: It is found that a combination of PCR and detection of CMV antigen after short-term incubation and directly in alveolar cells is optimal for rapid identification ofCMV.

Infection with Rhodococcus equi in a patient with sarcoidosis treated with corticosteroids.
TL;DR: R. R. equi has been reported to cause infection in patients with neoplastic disease and/or immunosuppression, but the disease might be more common than is suggested by the sparse case reports in the literature, owing to lack of familiarity with the organism.

Disseminated pulmonary aspergillosis in a previously healthy young woman.
TL;DR: Although no definite diagnosis can be made, it seems likely that both siblings suffered from a defect in the immune system, probably chronic granulomatous disease of the autosomal recessive type, sometimes found in young adults without a clear history of earlier infections.
