Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education

Benedict Anderson’s deservedly famous thesis about the origins and nature
of modern nationalism turns around the central notion of an “imagined
community.” This category provides him with a matrix out of which one
can apprehend-theoretically and historically-the different variants of nationalist discourse formulated over the last two hundred years. We will refer,
in the brief comments that follow, to three basic dimensions structuring
the fabric of Anderson’s argument: 1) the presuppositions implicit in the
notion of an “imagined” community; 2) the kind of substitutability or solidarity which is required to be a member of such a community; 3) the kind
of relationship that is established between such a community-which is by
definition finite or limited-and its outside. Before that, however, let us
describe the main features of Anderson’s thesis.

On Imagined Communities

Photo novella does not entrust cameras to health specialists, policymakers, or profes sional photographers, but puts them in the hands of children, rural women, grassroots workers, and other constituents with little access to those who make decisions over their lives. Promoting what Brazilian educator Paulo Freire has termed "education for critical consciousness," photo novella allows people to document and discuss their life conditions as they see them. This process of empowerment education also enables community members with little money, power, or status to communicate to policymakers where change must occur. This paper describes photo novella's underpinnings: empowerment education, feminist theory, and documentary photography. It draws on our experience implementing the process among 62 rural Chinese women, and shows that two major implications of photo novella are its contributions to changes in consciousness and in forming policy. Empowerment through Photo Novella: Portraits of Participation

In diesem Beitrag berichte ich von einem Projekt, in dem Fotografie als ethnografische Forschungs-, Prasentations- und Disseminationsmethodik zum Einsatz kam. Das Projekt war Teil eines qualitativen Methodenkurses, in dessen Rahmen Promotionsstudent/innen lernten, visuelle Daten zu erheben und auszuwerten. Hierzu gehorte, dass sie ihr eigenes Leben mithilfe von Fotografien darstellen und reflektieren sollten. Diese Fotografien, die die Studierenden selbst machten, dienten – versehen mit kurzen Titeln – als einzige Datenquelle. Es wurde jedoch ersichtlich, dass fur eine Analyse die Fotos ohne jegliches textliche Material nicht reichten. Schriftliche Statements waren hilfreich gewesen, um den Kontext der Fotos und die Intention der Fotografierenden nachvollziehen und verstehen zu konnen. Ich komme hiervon ausgehend zu dem Schluss, dass eine Ethnografie, die sich nur auf Fotos beschranken wurde, nicht moglich ist; der Einbezug weiterer Datensorten ist fur eine sinnvolle Analyse unerlasslich. Dennoch ermoglichten das Fotografieren und die Prasentation der Fotos in der eigenen Studie den Teilnehmenden, ihre Identitat als Promotionsstudent/innen visuell zu konstruieren und sichtbar zu machen.
