Oxidative Functionalization of Polypropylene Mesh Surface by Radio Frequency Plasma

To enrich the application of nanocomposite hydrogels, we introduced two types of nanocellulose (CNC, cellulose nanocrystals; CNF, cellulose nanofibers) into the soy protein isolate(SPI)- konjac glucomannan (KGM) composite hydrogel system, respectively. The similarities and differences between the two types of nanocellulose as textural improvers of composite gels were successfully explored, and a model was developed to elaborate their interaction mechanisms. Appropriate levels of CNC (1.0 %) and CNF (0.75 %) prolonged SPI denaturation within the system, exposed more buried functional groups, improved molecular interactions, and strengthened the honeycomb structural skeleton formed by KGM. The addition of CNC resulted in greater gel strength (SKC1 2708.53 g vs. Control 810.35 g), while the addition of CNF improved the elasticity (SKF0.75 1940.24 g vs. Control 405.34 g). This was mainly attributed to the reinforcement of the honeycomb-structured, water binding and trapping, and the synergistic effect of covalent (disulfide bonds) and non-covalent interactions (hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds) within the gel network. However, the balance and interactions between proteins and polysaccharides were disrupted in the composite system with excessive CNF addition (≥0.75 %), which broken the stability of the honeycomb-like structure. We expect this study will draw attention on potential applications of CNC and CNF in protein-polysaccharide binary systems and facilitate the creation of novel, superior, mechanically strength-regulated nanofiber composite gels. 

Investigation of the effect and mechanism of nanocellulose on soy protein isolate- konjac glucomannan composite hydrogel system.

• A newly developed Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 metallic glass (MG) is reported that performs better than existing implant materials in terms of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance in different SBF media and cell viability. • The reported MG exhibits superior corrosion resistance in four different stimulated body fluids which is attributed to the formation of a strong oxide passive layer on the surface which contains Dy 2 O 3 in addition to ZrO 2 and Al 2 O 3 . • The ratio of elastic-to-total work is 0.47 for Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 , suggesting that the implant will retain its shape even if it deforms in service. • Based on preliminary evidence, the Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 MG appears to be a promising material for implant applications. In the present research work, extensive investigation on microstructure, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, in-vitro biocompatibility and cell adhesion has been carried out on Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 metallic glass to propose new biomaterial. Structural analysis revealed the amorphous nature of Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 with no distinct crystalline phases. The mechanical properties of the metallic glass ribbon were determined using nanoindentation tests with hardness value as 4.68 GPa and elastic modulus 32.14 GPa. Potentiodyanamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis on Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 was studied in simulated body fluid. The cell viability studies in Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 metallic glass confirmed good in-vitro biocompatibility in a 72 h test. It is anticipated that the results of this work can provide an insight to further pursue investigation on the material for potential bioimplant applications. . 

Structural characterization, biocorrosion and in-vitro investigation on Zr62Cu22Al10Fe5Dy1 metallic glass for bio-implant applications

In this study, we developed an efficient method to prepare a crosslinked poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)/poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate) (PVP/PEGDA) copolymer-grafted non-woven polypropylene (PP) sheet for which water can be used as a green solvent while providing a large amount of grafting functional groups on the PP matrix without diminishing mechanical properties. It was demonstrated that subsequent iodine complexation of the PP-g-PVP/PEGDA produces a strong antibacterial activity desirable for wound dressings. Efficient functionalization of hydrophobic non-woven PP sheet was achieved using electron beam (EB)-induced graft polymerization of vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) with the addition of hydrophilic crosslinker (PEGDA), resulting in the PP-g-PVP/PEGDA. In this preparation method, the grafting degree was remarkably increased up to 3-fold, even in the water solvent, and was found to be controlled by the concentration of VP and PEGDA. To impart antibacterial activity, the PP-g-PVP/PEGDA subsequently underwent iodine complexation, yielding PP-g-PVP/PEGDA-I. Structural analysis and water absorptivity studies confirmed that excellent water-absorbing PVP/PEGDA-I complexes were successfully introduced in the non-woven PP sheet without significant change in the porous structure of the PP sheet. Moreover, the PP-g-PVP/PEGDA-I exhibited strong antibacterial activities against Gram-negative E. coli, Gram-positive S. aureus, and MRSA bacterial species in a time-killing assay, and the activities showed high dependence on the grafting degree. This finding demonstrates that the PP-g-PVP/PEGDA-I can effectively and immediately inactivate external bacteria upon invasion. This green and efficient strategy is thus promising to produce PVP-I complex-based wound dressings with rapid antibacterial activity.

Nanocellulose derived from a renewable resource has the property of biodegradability, nontoxic, extremely high surface area, and tunable surface chemistry. Due to these features, nanocellulose has been emerged as a promising and sustainable bionanomaterial to improve the mechanical and barrier properties of paper sheet. Besides, it can also be the alternative of conventionally used inorganic fillers in papermaking. However, the production cost of nanocellulose is high because of high energy requirements, which leads to an increase in the cost of paper production. Chemical and enzymatic pretreatment is a new advancement in the technology that can be used to minimize the production cost of nanocellulose. This chapter aims to present an extended review about the challenges and solutions of using nanocellulose in the papermaking process, addition of nanocellulose as nanofiller and bionanocoating, modification of nanocellulose, and its market perspectives. Therefore nanocellulose can be the potential material for the papermaking industry, and in near future, it is expected to have a broader commercial market of nanocellulose.
