Do natural resource rent and corruption governance reshape the environmental Kuznets curve for ecological footprint? Evidence from 158 countries

Greening the globe: Uncovering the impact of environmental policy, renewable energy, and innovation on ecological footprint

EU countries declared the strategic goal to achieve energy independence and increase energy efficiency. In this case, EU countries have provided a vast range of incentives, mechanisms, and directives to promote energy efficiency. Ukraine as a potential candidate should provide a convergent policy with EU countries to increase energy efficiency. The paper aims to estimate energy efficiency based on the revealed convergent and divergent determinants of energy policies among the EU and Ukraine. The data are compiled from the World Energy Statistics Yearbook, the European Statistical Office, the International Energy Agency, SolAbility agencies, and State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The study applies σ- i β-convergence theory to determine the convergent and divergent determinants of the country’s energy efficiency. The empirical results allow concluding that Ukraine has an average level in the integrated energy efficiency index of the national economy, and the highest value of this index was in 2008. The highest values of energy efficiency were in Sweden and Denmark among EU countries. Besides, the findings confirm that the Ukrainian government should pay attention to divergent determinants (expenditure for environmental protection, pricing for energy resources, etc.) to improve the country’s energy efficiency.

Convergence of Energy Policies between the EU and Ukraine under the Green Deal Policy

Debates on how growth and urbanization affect the environment have been intense, but they lack the global perspective. Therefore, this research examined those relationships, and to a greater extent other forms of global environmental degradation, such as foreign direct investment (FDI). It also explored the relationships between industrialization and technologies. The results, using Westerlund cointegration and quantile regressions over the period 1995–2017, show cointegration and regional heterogeneities in the environmental transmissions of economic development, industrialization, renewable energy, urbanization and FDI. The results show that economic development generates more environmental degradation in all quantiles at a global level, whereas urbanization and renewable energy reduce environmental degradation in all quantiles, with the highest effect being in the upper quantiles. On the other hand, industrialization affects the lower quantiles negatively and significantly but affects the upper quantiles positively. Finally, the empirical analysis supports the paradise haven or pollution halo hypothesis (PHH) for the 40th, 50th, 60th and 80th quantiles. This suggests that FDI inflows have a detrimental effect on the host country for these quantiles. Therefore, among the objectives of the policies are to give priority to more sustainable economic growth processes, which contribute to reducing environmental degradation, and furthermore to reinforce strict environmental laws on investment inflows and to build sustainable urbanization and industrialization processes for countries.

Impacts of industrialization, renewable energy and urbanization on the global ecological footprint: A quantile regression approach

Probing the essential role of green finance (GF) and green technology (GT) is crucial to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement goals. The investigation utilises the wavelet-based quantile-on-quantile regression method to capture the comprehensive interrelation among GF, GT and the progress towards Paris Climate Agreement goals (PCA). The quantitative analyses indicate that GF and GT exert favourable impacts on PCA at the high and low quantiles in the short run, underlining that green finance and green technology could facilitate the realisation of Paris Climate Agreement goals, but the adverse effects in several cases contradict this opinion. In addition, GF and GT's positive and negative impacts on PCA are weakened in the medium term, and their stimulatory effects are also shown in the long-run scenario. Through comparing the impacts of GF and FT on PCA, and find that green finance contributes more towards the Paris Climate Agreement goals than green technology. Against the backdrop of increasingly severe climate changes and risks, these discussions could put forward meaningful lessons to realise the Paris Climate Agreement goals by developing green finance and green technology.

As humanity's quest for natural resources is progressively exceeding Earth's biological rate of regeneration, environmental issues such as greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere, ocean acidification and groundwater depletion is accelerating. The ecological footprint provides a method for measuring how much lands can support the consumption of the natural resources. This study examines in depth the role of indigenous and foreign innovation on ecological footprint as well as the potential interaction between them in 105 countries classified into developed and developing countries. In addition, we consider the effect of corruption on ecological footprint using dynamic panel threshold regression over the period from 1992 to 2017. The Cross-Sectionally Augmented Autoregressive Distributed Lag (CS-ARDL) estimator is used to tackle the heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence in the data. The results demonstrate that indigenous and foreign innovations and their interaction significantly reduce ecological footprint in developed countries. By contrast, indigenous and foreign innovations have a crowding-out effect on ecological footprint in developing countries. Based on the dynamic threshold regression results, the indigenous and foreign innovations and their interaction significantly increase ecological footprint of developed countries when corruption crosses the threshold point. In developing countries, when corruption exceeds the threshold point, the inhibiting effects of indigenous and foreign innovations and their interaction further increase. For control variables, economic growth and urbanization significantly increase ecological footprint of these countries. Finally, developed and developing countries should collaborate to build comprehensive sustainable growth mechanisms in order to make resource-friendly technologies affordable for all income level countries.
