Porous organic materials have garnered colossal interest with the scientific fraternity due to their excellent gas sorption performances, catalytic abilities, energy storage capacities, and other intriguing applications. This review encompasses the recent significant breakthroughs and the conventional functions and practices in the field of porous organic materials to find useful applications and imparts a comprehensive understanding of the strategic evolution of the design and synthetic approaches of porous organic materials with tunable characteristics. We present an exhaustive analysis of the design strategies with special emphasis on the topologies of crystalline and amorphous porous organic materials. In addition to elucidating the structure–function correlation and state-of-the-art applications of porous organic materials, we address the challenges and restrictions that prevent us from realizing porous organic materials with tailored structures and properties for useful applications.

Porous Organic Materials: Strategic Design and Structure–Function Correlation

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) represent an important category of porous solids. PAFs possess rigid frameworks and exceptionally high surface areas, and, uniquely, they are constructed from carbon-carbon-bond-linked aromatic-based building units. Various functionalities can either originate from the intrinsic chemistry of their building units or are achieved by postmodification of the aromatic motifs using established reactions. Specially, the strong carbon-carbon bonding renders PAFs stable under harsh chemical treatments. Therefore, PAFs exhibit specificity in their chemistry and functionalities compared with conventional porous materials such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks. The unique features of PAFs render them being tolerant of severe environments and readily functionalized by harsh chemical treatments. The research field of PAFs has experienced rapid expansion over the past decade, and it is necessary to provide a comprehensive guide to the essential development of the field at this stage. Regarding research into PAFs, the synthesis, functionalization, and applications are the three most important topics. In this thematic review, the three topics are comprehensively explained and aptly exemplified to shed light on developments in the field. Current questions and a perspective outlook will be summarized.

Ordered covalent organic frameworks, COFs and PAFs. From preparation to application

Porous organic frameworks (POFs), a general term for covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), etc., are constructed from organic building monomers with strong covalent bonds and have generated great interest among researchers. The remarkable features, such as large surface areas, permanent porosity, high thermal and chemical stability, and convenient functionalization, promote the great potential of POFs in diverse applications. A critical overview of the important development in the design and synthesis of COFs, CTFs, and PAFs is provided and their state-of-the-art applications in analytical chemistry are discussed. POFs and their functional composites have been explored as advanced materials in "turn-off" or "turn-on" fluorescence detection and novel stationary phases for chromatographic separation, as well as a promising adsorbent for sample preparation methods. In addition, the prospects for the synthesis and utilization of POFs in analytical chemistry are also presented. These prospects can offer an outlook and reference for further study of the applications of POFs.

Porous Organic Frameworks: Advanced Materials in Analytical Chemistry

Catalytic conversion of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethyl furfural over sulfonated hyper-cross-linked polymer in DMSO

Currently, synthesis of most porous organic frameworks (POFs) requires noble metals as the main catalyst. Herein we report a low-cost and straightforward synthetic strategy to develop porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs). With AlCl3 as the catalyst, the Scholl coupling reaction could occur between the phenyl rings of aromatic compounds. Using 3-dimensional monomers, such as triphenylamine, tetraphenylmethane, tetraphenylsilane, and tetraphenylgermane, we successfully obtained a series of PAFs with moderate Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas ranging from 515 m2 g−1 to 1119 m2 g−1. Among the obtained PAF materials, PAF-41 exhibited the best CH4 and CO2 sorption capacity with CH4 (1.04 mmol g−1) and CO2 (3.52 mmol g−1) at 273 K. In addition, PAF-43 demonstrated its comparably high isosteric heat of adsorption at 34.8 kJ mol−1 for CO2 and 29.7 kJ mol−1 for CH4. It is also worth mentioning that the developed approach also overcomes typical flaws of some classic PAFs, such as high cost and complexity of precursor preparation.
