Planning algorithms are impacting technical disciplines and industries around the world, including robotics, computer-aided design, manufacturing, computer graphics, aerospace applications, drug design, and protein folding. This coherent and comprehensive book unifies material from several sources, including robotics, control theory, artificial intelligence, and algorithms. The treatment is centered on robot motion planning but integrates material on planning in discrete spaces. A major part of the book is devoted to planning under uncertainty, including decision theory, Markov decision processes, and information spaces, which are the “configuration spaces” of all sensor-based planning problems. The last part of the book delves into planning under differential constraints that arise when automating the motions of virtually any mechanical system. Developed from courses taught by the author, the book is intended for students, engineers, and researchers in robotics, artificial intelligence, and control theory as well as computer graphics, algorithms, and computational biology.

Planning Algorithms: Introductory Material

The application of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) in multiobjective optimization is currently receiving growing interest from researchers with various backgrounds. Most research in this area has understandably concentrated on the selection stage of EAs, due to the need to integrate vectorial performance measures with the inherently scalar way in which EAs reward individual performance, that is, number of offspring.

In this review, current multiobjective evolutionary approaches are discussed, ranging from the conventional analytical aggregation of the different objectives into a single function to a number of population-based approaches and the more recent ranking schemes based on the definition of Pareto optimality. The sensitivity of different methods to objective scaling and/or possible concavities in the trade-off surface is considered, and related to the (static) fitness landscapes such methods induce on the search space. From the discussion, directions for future research in multiobjective fitness assignment and search strategies are identified, including the incorporation of decision making in the selection procedure, fitness sharing, and adaptive representations.

The first revision of this third volume is a survey of classical computer techniques for sorting and searching. It extends the treatment of data structures in Volume 1 to consider both large and small databases and internal and external memories.

In this paper we initiate a new area of study dealing with the best way to search a possibly unbounded region for an object. The model for our search algorithms is that we must pay costs proportional to the distance of the next probe position relative to our current position. This model is meant to give a realistic cost measure for a robot moving in the plane. We also examine the effect of decreasing the amount of a priori information given to search problems. Problems of this type are very simple analogues of non-trivial problems on searching an unbounded region, processing digitized images, and robot navigation. We show that for some simple search problems, knowing the general direction of the goal is much more informative than knowing the distance to the goal.

Searching in the Plane

This paper considers the problem of using genetic algorithms to design structures. We relax one constraint on classical genetic algorithms and describe a genetic algorithm that uses di erential information about search direction to design structures. This di erential information is captured by a masked crossover operator which also removes the bias toward short schemas. We analyze performance and present some preliminary results. Further, consideration of this problem suggests a partial solution to the identi cation of the deception problem.

We investigate various alternative definitions of convexity in this setting rather than the standard definition. At the same time, we indicate how a firm mathematical foundation for these notions can be obtained.
