Recommendation engine apparatus and associated methods provide content compiled from various sources and selected to match user preferences. In one embodiment, the recommendation apparatus comprises a headend entity; in another, it is co-located on a user's CPE. In one embodiment, the recommendation engine creates content records from content metadata for comparison to a user profile. The user profile is pre-programmed; however has the ability to dynamically shift toward a user's preferences as the user takes actions regarding content. Client applications are utilized to compile and present content; feedback mechanisms are utilized to enable “learning” from user activities to generate more precise recommendations as well as to “unlearn” stale preferences. Recommended content is displayed in the form of a playlist, or as a continuous stream on a virtual channel, or presented in an electronic program guide. A business rules “engine” useful in implementing operational or business goals is also disclosed.

A client device receives a broadcast content signal containing an interactive identifier over a managed network. The interactive identifier may be a trigger that is included in a header or embedded within the digital video data. In response to identification of the trigger, the client device sends a user request for interactive content over an unmanaged network. For example, the managed network may be a one-way satellite television network, IP-television network or cable television network and the unmanaged network may be the Internet. The client device switches between receiving data from the managed network to receiving data from the unmanaged network. Video encoding parameters of the interactive content are varied based on detected variations in the audio transmission bandwidth.

Methods, systems, and computer programs for delivering supplemental content within streamed media are provided. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a request at a client for a media segment, which includes a plurality of video frames. Further, a stream of the media segment to the client from a media server is obtained and supplemental content (SC) is accessed from storage in the client or from an SC server. The access of the SC from the SC server can be performed before receiving the request, or while obtaining the stream, or after the stream has been obtained. Further, the method includes combining the media segment with the SC at the client, which inserts the SC to add or augment video frames from the media segment. The combination is then displayed to the user.

Access to interactive content at a client device through the use of triggers is disclosed. The client device is coupled to a television communication network and receives an encoded broadcast video stream containing at least one trigger. The client device decodes the encoded broadcast video stream and parses the broadcast video stream for triggers. As the broadcast video stream is parsed, the stream is output to a display device. When a trigger is identified, the client device automatically tunes to an interactive content channel. The client device sends a signal indicative of the trigger through the television communication network to the processing office. The processing office can then use the information contained within the trigger signal to provide content to the client device. The content may be interactive content, static content, or the broadcast program stitched with interactive or static content. The user of the client device can then interact with any interactive content.

Using Triggers with Video for Interactive Content Identification

A system for creating composite encoded video from two or more encoded video sources in the encoded domain. In response to user input, a markup language-based graphical layout is retrieved. The graphical layout includes frame locations within a composite frame for at least a first encoded source and a second encoded source. The system either retrieves or receives the first and second encoded sources. The sources include block-based transform encoded data. The system also includes a stitcher module for stitching together the first encoded source and the second encoded source according to the frame locations of the graphical layout to form an encoded frame. The system outputs an encoded video stream that is transmitted to a client device associated with the user. In response to further user input, the system updates the state of an object model and replaces all or a portion of one or more frames of the encoded video stream. The system may be used with MPEG encoded video.

For example, the managed network may be a one-way satellite television network, IP television network, or cable television network, and the non-managed network may be the Internet. The client device switches reception of data from the managed network, and reception of data from the non-managed network.
