This systematic literature review explores the impact of innovative teaching approaches on student motivation and academic achievement in online blended learning. A thorough search of five electronic databases for studies published between January 2009 and May 2023 yielded 1468 records. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome and Study‐design (PICOS) frameworks as the basis for the eligibility criteria, 47 studies were eligible and reviewed. The findings revealed that the effects of motivation were influenced by various factors, such as the blended course design, instructor's support, learning environment and the student's characteristics. The common innovative teaching and learning techniques and tools which advanced better teaching and learning were found to be interactive lessons, the use of virtual reality technology, artificial intelligence, project‐based learning, inquiry‐based learning, jigsaw, cloud computing, flipped classroom, peer teaching, peer feedback, crossover teaching and personalised teaching. These techniques positively and significantly affected motivation and academic achievement. Furthermore, results also suggest that educators should carefully consider the needs and preferences of their students when designing their courses and curricula to motivate and support students to achieve their full potential. Based on these findings, instructor support through innovative teaching and learning is vital to sustaining meaningful, innovative interactions that motivate students and promote better academic achievements in innovative online blended learning. Therefore, this study proposed a framework that illustrates that when students are well motivated, they develop personal and academic qualities such as interest, confidence, belonging, cooperation and trust in the educational experiences, resulting in better academic achievement.

Motivate students for better academic achievement: A systematic review of blended innovative teaching and its impact on learning

Abstract Meta‐analyses suggest that student learning outcomes (SLOs) are comparable across modalities of instruction. None of these studies examined how unmet student expectations (here, unexpected changes in course delivery) might increase perceptions of student–instructor‐university psychological contract breaches (PCBs) and, ultimately, perceived SLOs within and across modalities. The COVID‐19 pandemic provided an opportunity to study these potential relationships because many residential institutions of higher education opted into, or were required to, offer distance and/or blended learning to accommodate COVID‐19 safety mandates. This study sampled undergraduate students (n = 155) from a university, which, before the pandemic, offered exclusively face‐to‐face classroom instruction. During the Fall 2020 semester, however, this university offered three modalities of instruction: (1) face‐to‐face; (2) blended learning; and (3) distance education. The results of this study suggest that perceived PCBs by instructors and universities negatively influence underling indices of student achievement in terms of motivation, engagement, and learning within and across modalities of instruction. Given this and near universal decrements in student enrollment and retention in institutions of higher education, it is important for universities and instructors to understand, explicitly and transparently negotiate, and meet student expectations to improve student progression to graduation and maintain competitiveness among similar institutions.

The effects of unexpected changes to content delivery on student learning outcomes: A psychological contract perspective during the COVID‐19 era

Blended learning (BL) is a teaching model that combines face-to-face activities in the classroom with activities outside the classroom through the introduction of technology that is computer-based, distance, or mobile learning, among others. There are several BL models to adopt, depending on the importance and extent to which the technology is used. It brings great benefits to the learner and involves teachers in the design of new teaching methods.

Implementation of Blended Learning during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic led to higher education institutions adopting alternative teaching models to continue their work while complying with health measures. Specifically, in Spain, once the lockdown period was over, universities adopted the blended learning (BL) model, which allowed for a partial return to the classroom. The BL model meant a completely new approach for students that impacted their learning experience. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), this paper explores in-depth students’ experience with BL—social–behavioural, cognitive–affective, sensory and formative—and tests the impact of BL on students’ satisfaction and their commitment to learning. Data were collected from a sample of 467 undergraduate students at Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) who filled out a self-administered questionnaire. The model proposed shows fit indices above the recommended thresholds, indicating an adequate model fit. Results suggest a positive influence of the different dimensions of BL experience on satisfaction. In addition, satisfaction with BL had a positive impact on students’ affective commitment. Going by these results, the students’ experience with BL has been positive, increasing their willingness to study. Finally, the implications of these results for higher educational institutions are discussed and future research lines suggested.

Student Experience, Satisfaction and Commitment in Blended Learning: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach

The COVID-19 pandemic upended the lives of adolescents and young adults across the globe. In response to the pandemic onset, educational institutions were forced to pivot to online learning, a new teaching and learning format for most secondary and university students. This systematic narrative review summarizes findings from 168 publications spanning 56 countries on students' educational outcomes and school climate as well as the internal assets and contextual supports that promoted academic well-being during the pandemic. Our findings suggest that young people commonly reported declines in their academic-related outcomes and school-based relationships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Internal assets (e.g., intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy) and contextual supports (i.e., relationships with teachers, peers, and parents) promoted academic well-being during the pandemic. Next steps for research on young people's academic well-being during the pandemic are suggested.
