Carbon Dioxide Capture in Metal–Organic Frameworks

The escalating level of atmospheric carbon dioxide is one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our age. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from large point sources such as power plants is one option for reducing anthropogenic CO(2) emissions; however, currently the capture alone will increase the energy requirements of a plant by 25-40%. This Review highlights the challenges for capture technologies which have the greatest likelihood of reducing CO(2) emissions to the atmosphere, namely postcombustion (predominantly CO(2)/N(2) separation), precombustion (CO(2)/H(2)) capture, and natural gas sweetening (CO(2)/CH(4)). The key factor which underlies significant advancements lies in improved materials that perform the separations. In this regard, the most recent developments and emerging concepts in CO(2) separations by solvent absorption, chemical and physical adsorption, and membranes, amongst others, will be discussed, with particular attention on progress in the burgeoning field of metal-organic frameworks.

Advances in flexible and functional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), also called soft porous crystals, are reviewed by covering the literature of the five years period 2009–2013 with reference to the early pertinent work since the late 1990s. Flexible MOFs combine the crystalline order of the underlying coordination network with cooperative structural transformability. These materials can respond to physical and chemical stimuli of various kinds in a tunable fashion by molecular design, which does not exist for other known solid-state materials. Among the fascinating properties are so-called breathing and swelling phenomena as a function of host–guest interactions. Phase transitions are triggered by guest adsorption/desorption, photochemical, thermal, and mechanical stimuli. Other important flexible properties of MOFs, such as linker rotation and sub-net sliding, which are not necessarily accompanied by crystallographic phase transitions, are briefly mentioned as well. Emphasis is given on reviewing the recent progress in application of in situ characterization techniques and the results of theoretical approaches to characterize and understand the breathing mechanisms and phase transitions. The flexible MOF systems, which are discussed, are categorized by the type of metal-nodes involved and how their coordination chemistry with the linker molecules controls the framework dynamics. Aspects of tailoring the flexible and responsive properties by the mixed component solid-solution concept are included, and as well examples of possible applications of flexible metal–organic frameworks for separation, catalysis, sensing, and biomedicine.

The present study attempts to understand the use of the flexible porous chromium terephthalate Cr(OH)(O2C−C6H4−CO2) denoted MIL-53(Cr) (MIL = Material from Institut Lavoisier) for the separation of mixtures of CO2 and CH4 at ambient temperature. The coadsorption of CO2 and CH4 was studied by a variety of different techniques. In situ synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction allowed study of the breathing of the solid upon adsorption of the gas mixtures and simultaneously measured Raman spectra yielded an estimation of the adsorbed quantities of CO2 and CH4, as well as a quantification of the fraction of the narrow pore (NP) and the large pore (LP) form of MIL-53. Quantitative coadsorption data were then measured by gravimetry and by breakthrough curves. In addition, computer simulation was performed to calculate the composition of the adsorbed phase in comparison with experimental equilibrium isotherms and breakthrough results.
