Growth and longevity of the mola carplet Amblypharyngodon mola (Cyprinidae) in the Payra River, southern Bangladesh

Sex ratio, length-weight and length-length relationships of Amblypharyngodon mola were studied in the Payra River during February 2016-January 2017. Monthly samples were collected from the small-scale fishers of set bagnet fishery in the Payra River. All specimens were sexed out and standard length (SL), total length (TL), fork length (FL) and body weight (BW) were measured. The overall sex ratio showed no significant difference between sexes. However, the monthly sex ratio was 1:1 for almost all the year, except in June when females were significantly more abundant than males. With regard to the size class, the sex ratio was found to be non-significant up to 4.0 cm TL, however; at 5.0 cm TL the number of male was significantly higher than female and after that the number of female increased significantly than male till the maximum size class. The allometric coefficient ‘b’ of the LWRs between SL vs. BW and FL vs. BW indicated negative allometric growth and isometric growth respectively for both sexes. While TL vs. BW indicated positive allometric growth in males and isometric growth in females. On the other hand, the LWRs for pooled data indicated negative allometric growth, positive allometric growth and isometric growth for SL vs. BW, TL vs. BW and FL vs. BW respectively. The allometric coefficient ‘b’ of the LLRs between SL vs. TL, SL vs. FL and TL vs. FL indicated positive allometric growth, isometric growth and negative allometric growth respectively for both sexes. However, the pooled data shows positive allometric growth between SL vs. TL, negative allometric growth between SL vs. FL and between TL vs. FL. It was concluded that the data generated from the study will form a baseline tool for effective fisheries management and sustainable exploitation of A. mola in the Payra River as well as surrounding waters of Bangladesh.

Sex ratio, length-weight and length-length relationships of Amblypharyngodon mola (Cyprinidae) in the Payra River, southern Bangladesh

The present study was conducted to check the disparity between wild and cultured stock of Amblypharyngodon mola using the bio-morphometric data and meristic characteristics such as length-weight relationship (LWR) and relative gut length (RGL). A total of 656 specimens were collected using drag net and cast net for a period of one year from Daya river and about 226 fish individuals were collected from hatchery bred stock of ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar, India. No significant (P> 0.05) differences were observed in five meristic and twenty-two morphometric characters of wild and cultured stocks of mola. The estimated regression line showed a better relationship between the total length (TL) to standard length, fork length, pre-dorsal and post-dorsal length, orbit diameter (r2 value). Further, a negative allometric growth was also noticed in both stocks with the b value of 2.988 and 2.844 with r2 value of 0.915 and 0.923 in the wild and hatchery bred stocks respectively. Analysed length and weight were highly significant (P<0.01). The TL max of 9.1 cm was recorded in present study which is higher than that reported in Fish Base.

Indicator environmental variables in regulating the distribution patterns of small freshwater fish Amblypharyngodon mola in India and Bangladesh

The study on morphometric and meristic characters of two species of fresh water fishes under order Cypriniformes were carried out in Ichthyology laboratory of Zoological Survey of India, Northern Regional Centre, Dehradun. During the present investigation, 2 families under Cyprinidae and Cobitidae fish species are molacarplet, Amblypharyngodonmola Hamilton (1822) and Lepidocephalichthys guntea (Hamilton, 1822) were identified. The 22 morphometric and 5 meristic counts were studied from Song River, Dehradun. The result showed that all the morphometric characters of two fishes are dependent on the total length. The analyzed data of morphometric dimensions of fish species would be beneficial for the policy makers or planners to develop the scientific strategies for their protection and conservation. The findings will also set the scientific principles for the management and sustainable development of the commercially essential freshwater food fishes.

The present study describes the length weight relationships (LWR) of Mola carplet, Amblypharyngodon mola in selected wetlands of Assam, India from March, 2015 to Sept, 2016. A total of 440 specimens ranging from 4.1 to 9.0 cm (average 6.1 cm with SEM 0.195) total length (TL) and 0.98 to 8.25 g total weight (TW) (Average 3.3 g with SEM 0.285) were collected. The length-weight relationship of the fish suggested negative allometric growth. The regression models obtained was log W = 2.865 X – 1.785 log L, R2 = 0.964 for female and logW = 2.381 X -1.403 log L, R2 = 0.954 for male. Results for length weight relationships (R2 > 0.9) P
