Fiber Bragg grating sensors for monitoring of physical parameters: a comprehensive review

High-temperature measurements above 1000 °C are critical in harsh environments such as aerospace, metallurgy, fossil fuel, and power production. Fiber-optic high-temperature sensors are gradually replacing traditional electronic sensors due to their small size, resistance to electromagnetic interference, remote detection, multiplexing, and distributed measurement advantages. This paper reviews the sensing principle, structural design, and temperature measurement performance of fiber-optic high-temperature sensors, as well as recent significant progress in the transition of sensing solutions from glass to crystal fiber. Finally, future prospects and challenges in developing fiber-optic high-temperature sensors are also discussed.

Optical Fiber Sensors for High-Temperature Monitoring: A Review

High-temperature measurements are of significant importance in various harsh-environment engineering fields, such as fossil fuel production, and the metallurgical and aviation industries. In recent years, there is a steady trend to shift from conventional electronic sensors to optical fiber sensors for high-temperature applications. In particular, optical fiber sensors are small in size, immune to electromagnetic interference, readily applicable for remote sensing, have high elasticity, and incorporate capabilities for multiplexing and distributed sensing. However, commonly used fused silica optical fiber sensors exhibit severe limitations at ultrahigh temperatures due to significantly degraded optical and mechanical properties at temperatures >1000 °C. The excellent optical transparency, thermal and chemical stability, mechanical robustness, and high melting temperature (~2040 °C) of single-crystal sapphire fibers (SFs) make them a strong candidate for sensing applications in high-temperature environments. Translation of the sensing schemes from mature silica fiber sensors to SF sensors has undergone tremendous growth and advancements in the past two decades. However, hurdles to the development of a near-term deployable SF sensing system have proven persistent due to the highly multimodal nature of SFs. This article reviews sensing techniques that have been implemented with SFs recently. The aim is to provide a comprehensive summary of past research on SF sensing systems. Perspectives on further research into the challenging yet promising arena are also discussed.

Progress Toward Sapphire Optical Fiber Sensors for High-Temperature Applications

Fiber Bragg Gratings or FBGs have achieved significant attention towards sensing and communication applications due to their outstanding advantages. Due to its high sensitivity towards various design parameters, it is now widely used to measure different physical and chemical parameters in various industrial sectors, including harsh environment applications. This review presents a comparative study of different FBG-based temperature and strain sensors reported in recent years. The analytical formulation for such sensors is also presented in brief. Necessary numerical simulation results are incorporated. For FBG based temperature sensors, both low and high range are considered. Similarly, for FBG-based strain sensors, both uniform and non-uniform strain are considered and discussed in brief. Apart from the sensing applications, new variants of FBG like secondary gratings and Random Optical Grating by Ultraviolet or ultrafast laser Exposure (ROGUE) gratings are also discussed.

Recent advancements in fiber Bragg gratings based temperature and strain measurement

Readily available temperature sensing in boilers is necessary to improve efficiencies, minimize downtime, and reduce toxic emissions for a power plant. The current techniques are typically deployed as a single-point measurement and are primarily used for detection and prevention of catastrophic events due to the harsh environment. In this work, a multi-point temperature sensor based on wavelength-multiplexed sapphire fiber Bragg gratings (SFBGs) were fabricated via the point-by-point method with a femtosecond laser. The sensor was packaged and calibrated in the lab, including thermally equilibrating at 1200 °C, followed by a 110-h, 1000 °C stability test. After laboratory testing, the sensor system was deployed in both a commercial coal-fired and a gas-fired boiler for 42 days and 48 days, respectively. The performance of the sensor was consistent during the entire test duration, over the course of which it measured temperatures up to 950 °C (with some excursions over 1000 °C), showing the survivability of the sensor in a field environment. The sensor has a demonstrated measurement range from room temperature to 1200 °C, but the maximum temperature limit is expected to be up to 1900 °C, based on previous work with other sapphire based temperature sensors.

Application of Sapphire-Fiber-Bragg-Grating-Based Multi-Point Temperature Sensor in Boilers at a Commercial Power Plant

A distributed sensor based on wavelength-multiplexed sapphire fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) was designed and fabricated for temperature measurements in commercial boilers under field conditions. Three cascaded FBGs with Bragg wavelengths ranging from 1540 nm to 1570 nm were inscribed in a commercial air-clad single-crystal sapphire fiber, which were packaged inside high purity alumina sheath tubes. The packaged sensor was deployed in a commercial boiler through an existing view port during operation. The tests were performed in a coal-fired boiler, whose temperature varied based on power demands in the local area. The reflected signal from the sensor was simultaneously recorded by an onsite optical interrogation system and converted into temperature information, which was monitored remotely in real time through the Virginia Tech network. The performance of the sensor was consistent during the entire test duration of 42 days, over the course of which it measured temperatures up to 700°C, showing the survivability of the sensing system in a field environment. The system has a demonstrated temperature measurement range from 25°C to 1200°C.
