Caenorhabditis elegans employs innate and learned aversion in response to bacterial toxic metabolites tambjamine and violacein.
Francesco Ballestriero,Jadranka Nappi,Giuseppina Zampi,Paolo Bazzicalupo,Elia Di Schiavi,Suhelen Egan +5 more
TL;DR: It is found that C. elegans displays an innate avoidance behavior towards tambjamine YP1, however requires previous exposure to violacein before learning to avoid this metabolite, representing a valuable behavioral adaptation allowing bacteriovorus predators to distinguish between good and bad food sources.
A Caenorhabditis elegans model to study dopamine transporter deficiency syndrome
Placido Illiano,Ambra Lanzo,Damiana Leo,Maria Paglione,Giuseppina Zampi,Raul R. Gainetdinov,Raul R. Gainetdinov,Elia Di Schiavi +7 more
TL;DR: In vivo phenotypic findings demonstrate a functional conservation between human and nematode DAT and validate previous in vitro indications of the loss of function of hDAT in carriers of DTDS‐related mutations, which establish C. elegans as a novel animal model for fast and inexpensive screening of h DAT mutations in functional and in vivo tests.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Biocompatible Nanoplatform Based on Silica-Embedded SPIONs Functionalized with Polydopamine.
Miriam Romano,M. A. González Gómez,Pamela Santonicola,Noemi Aloi,S. Offer,J. Pantzke,Samuele Raccosta,Valeria Longo,Alessandro Surpi,Silvia Alacqua,Giuseppina Zampi,Valentin Dediu,Bernhard Michalke,Ralf Zimmerman,Mauro Manno,Yolanda Piñeiro,Paolo Colombo,Elia Di Schiavi,José Rivas,Paolo Bergese,Sebastiano Di Bucchianico +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a safe-by-design nanoplatform made of silica nanoparticles loaded with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and decorated with polydopamine (SPIONs@SiO2-PDA) is presented.

Silencing of Syntaxin 1A in the Dopaminergic Neurons Decreases the Activity of the Dopamine Transporter and Prevents Amphetamine-Induced Behaviors in C. elegans.
Ambra Lanzo,Bryan D. Safratowich,Sirisha Kudumala,Ivan Gallotta,Giuseppina Zampi,Elia Di Schiavi,Lucia Carvelli +6 more
TL;DR: Data suggest that Syntaxin-1A plays an important role in both functional and behavioral effects caused by Amph, and shows that reduced expression of unc-64 in the dopaminergic neurons decreases the capability of DAT in re-accumulating synaptic DA.
Green kiwifruit extracts protect motor neurons from death in a spinal muscular atrophy model in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Nadia Mazzarella,Ivana Giangrieco,Serena Visone,Pamela Santonicola,Jannis Achenbach,Giuseppina Zampi,Maurizio Tamburrini,Elia Di Schiavi,Maria Antonietta Ciardiello +8 more
TL;DR: This is the first study reporting a protective activity of green kiwifruit toward motor neurons, and it is demonstrated that C. elegans is an animal model suitable to study the biological activities contained in k Kiwifruit.
