THIS is a book of great length (444 pages of text), great learning (168 pages of notes), but not of commensurate understanding. It is a pity, because its defects may conceal its undoubted merits. When Dr. Popper is not caricaturing writers whose views he dislikes-and he dislikes a great many-he has a useful contribution to make to political thought, and his general moral theory (mainly to be found in the notes) is eminently sane and sensible. Coworking workplaces are shared production areas where the emerging class of ‘Millennials’ can work together. Unlike traditional ‘work-at-home’, this new business model shows clear pros for what concerns design-driven innovation, sustainable economies and creative industries. However, noise control and noise-related aspects need to be taken into account since they significantly affect the productivity and the livability of the work environment. To overcome this trend, we propose an innovative furniture system with integrated acoustic insulation panels that meets the new demands for original solutions for creative workplaces, mitigating the noise-related bad effects on workers.

Il Progetto Bicocca ha trasformato radicalmente una porzione consistente della Milano industriale, insediando funzioni residenziali, universitarie e direzionali in un’area dismessa nel cuore della citta. Il seguente contributo ripercorre la storia di questo controverso intervento, soffermandosi a descriverne le principali caratteristiche in termini di forma urbana, funzioni e presenza di spazi pubblici. Si vuole in particolare sottolineare come gli esiti di questa importante trasformazione urbana abbiano coinciso solo in parte con le attese che diversi attori, pubblici e privati, riponevano su di essa, in particolare per quanto riguarda la creazione di un nuovo "centro in periferia" auspicata da Vittorio Gregotti, realizzatore del masterplan relativo all’intera area.

In the last years, a new phase of economic crisis, which is concerning sectors of manufacturing industries, is affecting Europe. Focusing on Italy, sectors which have strongly characterized our country, such as textile and accessories, are facing with an fluctuating period of crisis. Also in this case, as it happened from late ‘80s, the urban structures and identities are seriously affected and need interventions of regeneration in order to gain new life both from social, productive and commercial point of views. Having in mind the Italian case, while the first phase identified had the characteristics of a disruptive macro-phenomenon, the second phase is more subtle and gradual. In this paper we are going to focus on changes of design culture in light of these urban phenomena. While we can already make a first evaluation of regeneration projects developed after the crisis of heavy industry sectors, the most recent events of industrial recession and the consequent regeneration of the correspondent empty areas are still ongoing. In order to analyze and, where it is possible, compare these two phases, we are going to look at two Italian case studies. The first is Bicocca, an area of Milan, which in the ‘90s was interested by a massive plan of regeneration and transformation after the closure of Breda and Pirelli industries. The second is Biella, a Piedmont Province city, which has been one of the most important centers for the textile and wool industry; the crisis of this sector strongly emerged in the first years on 2000 even if it had already begun between ‘80s and ‘90s when the biggest textile factories closed down. The differences between these two examples are not merely physical and dimensional but are clearly influenced by a different timing in the regeneration processes, which occurred in these areas (or, in the case of Biella, is still occurring). The analysis proposed in this paper will be focus on the action-research developed within two didactic experiences. Notwithstanding the distinctions in terms of objectives and actors involved, in this paper we are going to delineate a systemic approach to study and design for the regeneration, improvement and innovation of places. We will try to understand if, through strategic design, it is possible to identify those soft levers and interventions able to rejoin the pieces of places, which lost their functionality and identity.

Coworking is moving beyond its childhood years, and, as it’s growing up, it’s facing new challenges. Some questions are sparking, such as: how can coworking spaces retain their users? Is coworking involving the actual amount of users who it is saying to engage? Does the coworking movement affect cities and neighbourhoods? Can coworking spaces be built bottom-up? The paper starts with an analysis of the nature of paradigms of contemporary work, fertile terrain for the creation of coworking spaces, which are analyzed according to their characteristics in terms of people, spaces, goods, and processes. The analysis highlights a series of information that leads us to suggest that, yes, coworking spaces could actually be built bottom-up and that this process would bring great benefits to them, especially from the point of view of the community of people within and around them.

Can coworking spaces be built bottom-up?

More and more often we assist to a shift from a knowledge-exchange model, from teacher to students, to a more peer educational model, where a real specific problem is set as a goal of the learning process. The use of virtual environments allows all the actors, either students or teachers or partners to be involved in the generation of common knowledge in a collaborative arena where new skills and new methodologies arise for the use of all peers in order to increase awareness and defining solutions that really matter for the problem. From open resources to entirely open learning models, e.g. MOOC and open universities, today are becoming paradigms to create social and environmental innovation. Peer and Open Education is spreading as effective way for students to overcome not only problems with obtaining accurate information, at the same time developing skills on discerning how to judge the accuracy of the information they receive in the Internet era, but also to make the educational, and consequently the learning, process become self-motivated from the fact of being a chance to impact on real complex problems of life. This paper describes the specific case of the “Co.Meta” Lab, a didactical model born from the collaboration between the Design School of the Politecnico di Milano and a Charity Foundation Fondazione Trentina per l'Autismo. A complex socially relevant problem-goal, improving the quality of life for people with Autism, was introduced as the core of the learning process. The initiative was called Co.Meta by merging the concepts of “Cooperation” and “meta-design” and was the opportunity to experiment a design teaching approach that brought self-motivation from students in learning tools and methodologies. Design operated widely into daily issues for autistic people bridging the gap between the consciousness about design responsibility and new perspectives for the future young design professionals. Since 2012 the course focusses on the generation of product-system projects. Students have designed several concepts for brand new products from games to therapy supplies to disability devices. The recipients are patients, relatives and care givers, all gravitating around Autism, an unsolved and little-studied pathology implying huge complexity and a deep social impact. The designing process is supported by an online blog, that serves as instrument for knowledge management and as communication and networking tool. Autism is a multi-faceted and complex issue that requires access to wide and specific information, a kind of research that normally would not be possible time-wise. From networking the research we allowed the coopetition among teams happen and this led to the creation of shared knowledge among students and with the Foundation, in a fully open source perspective. Psychologists, therapists and educational trainers were also involved to give their support, either in the classroom or online, allowing students to better address the field of interest and giving proof of the multidisciplinary perspective of the design practice. It actually was also an opportunity of networking, many other initiatives started from the collaboration on the activities. The peer and open education approach is today a new model that in this case has been applied to design teaching, creating new value both for the public institution and for the society, while generating and testing new tools for cooperative learning for the future young designers.
