We present a comprehensive and up-to-date compilation of band parameters for all of the nitrogen-containing III–V semiconductors that have been investigated to date. The two main classes are: (1) “conventional” nitrides (wurtzite and zinc-blende GaN, InN, and AlN, along with their alloys) and (2) “dilute” nitrides (zinc-blende ternaries and quaternaries in which a relatively small fraction of N is added to a host III–V material, e.g., GaAsN and GaInAsN). As in our more general review of III–V semiconductor band parameters [I. Vurgaftman et al., J. Appl. Phys. 89, 5815 (2001)], complete and consistent parameter sets are recommended on the basis of a thorough and critical review of the existing literature. E-textiles can also more easily adapt to fast changes in the computational and sensing requirements of any specific application, this one representing a useful feature for power management and context awareness. The vision behind wearable computing foresees future electronic systems to be an integral part of our everyday outfits. Such electronic devices have to meet special requirements concerning wearability. Wearable systems will be characterized by their ability to automatically recognize the activity and the behavioral status of their own user as well as of the situation around her/him, and to use this information to adjust the systems' configuration and functionality. This review focuses on recent advances in the field of Smart Textiles and pays particular attention to the materials and their manufacturing process. Each technique shows advantages and disadvantages and our aim is to highlight a possible trade-off between flexibility, ergonomics, low power consumption, integration and eventually autonomy.

Balanced electroabsorption modulators (B-EAM) are an attractive alternative to the cross-coupled Mach-Zehnder modulator. The B-EAM enables bias independent suppression of even-order distortions, relative intensity noise (RIN), and common amplified spontaneous emission noise. By biasing the B-EAM at the 3 rd order null, a 5 th order distortion limited spurious free dynamic range can be achieved. We report on the experimental demonstration of the simultaneous suppression of laser RIN, 2 nd and 3 rd order distortions using a 300 μm long B-EAM.

The design and characterization of a dual-drive (DD) Z-cut Ti:LiNbO3 electrooptical modulator are presented. Both the radio frequency (RF) electrode layout and the optical splitters and combiners of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer are investi- gated: The former is designed to avoid RF line crosstalk, whereas the latter is to obtain a low-loss longitudinally short splitter struc- ture, able to properly separate the interferometer straight optical waveguide sections. First, the RF analysis is addressed, simulating the small-signal behavior of the DD coplanar waveguide electrode structure as a function of the central ground width. The perfor- mances of different splitter layouts (circular segment bends, sin- bends, and offset bends) are then investigated using the beam propagation method. Finally, experimental results on the electrical and optical test pattern structures, and of the DD Z-cut complete modulator, are discussed and compared with simulations.
