Fundamento Analizar la produccion de la actividad cientifica de centros e instituciones espanolas sobre la infeccion por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH)/sida entre 1991–1999. Metodo Se seleccionaron los documentos publicados y recogidos en la base de datos MedLine (CD-ROM) en el periodo 1991–1999. Para la seleccion aplicamos las palabras «Spain» o «Espana» en el campo de direccion de los autores y los terminos «HIV», «AIDS» o «VIH» o «sida» en cualquiera de los campos. La produccion de los documentos durante el periodo se ha analizado segun la especialidad del primer firmante, area tematica del documento, tipo de institucion, centro de procedencia y zona geografica. Resultados Se analizaron 2.065 documentos. Del inicio al final del estudio el numero anual de documentos publicados se duplico (de 148 documentos en 1991 a 295 en 1999; r = 0,917; p Conclusion La produccion cientifica de los profesionales espanoles sobre la infeccion por el VIH/sida ha aumentado en el periodo 1991-1999 debido principalmente a un aumento en las publicaciones en revistas extranjeras. Se ha producido tambien una adaptacion de la tematica de la publicacion a los cambios epidemiologicos acontecidos en la infeccion por el VIH a lo largo de la ultima decada.

La producción científica española respecto a la infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana/sida. Un estudio a través de MedLine (1991-1999)

Introduccion. Analizar la produccion y la repercusion de la actividad cientifica de autores espanoles en bacteriologia, microbiologia, micologia, parasitologia y virologia. Metodos. Se seleccionaron los documentos publicados y recogidos en la base de datos MEDLINE (version WEBSPIRS 4.2) de 1990 a 2002, mediante la estrategia: ("Spain" OR "Espana") AND ("microb*" OR "virol*" OR "parasit*" OR "bacter*" OR "micol*" OR "mycol*" OR "retrovirus*") en el campo direccion del autor. Resultados. Se recuperaron 5.259 documentos. El numero anual de documentos publicados se duplico (de 253 documentos en 1990 a 512 en 2002) (r 2 = 0,92; p < 0,001), especialmente en revistas extranjeras (de 175 documentos a 447) (r 2 = 0,95; p < 0,001). El 50,9% de los documentos se generaron en las universidades, el 35,8% en los hospitales, el 5,4% en el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), y el 5,2% en el Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Los centros del CSIC (r 2 = 0,90) y las universidades (r 2 = 0,88) mostraron un mayor crecimiento de documentos. La Universidad de Barcelona (5,3%) fue el principal centro universitario en numero de publicaciones y el Hospital Ramon y Cajal (2,9%) el primer centro hospitalario. Las Comunidades Autonomas de Madrid (29,2%) y Cataluna (17,5%) concentraron la mayor actividad productiva. La media del factor de impacto esperado (FIE) de los documentos fue de 2,340. El FIE aumento de 1,977 en 1990 a 2,507 en 2002 (r 2 = 0,81). Conclusion. La produccion cientifica espanola y su repercusion en microbiologia y areas afines se incremento durante el periodo 1990-2002 debido principalmente a un aumento en las publicaciones en revistas extranjeras. Las universidades ocupan el primer lugar en la investigacion en estos campos.

Growth of literature in the field of Hepatitis-C

Quantitative survey of research articles, as an application of bibliometrics, is an effective tool for grasping overall trends in various medical research fields. This type of survey has been also applied to infectious disease research; however, previous studies were insufficient as they underestimated articles published in non-English or regional journals. Using a combination of Scopus™ and PubMed, the databases of scientific literature, and English and non-English keywords directly linked to infectious disease control, we identified international and regional infectious disease journals. In order to ascertain whether the newly selected journals were appropriate to survey a wide range of research articles, we compared the number of original articles and reviews registered in the selected journals to those in the 'Infectious Disease Category' of the Science Citation Index Expanded™ (SCI Infectious Disease Category) during 1998-2006. Subsequently, we applied the newly selected journals to survey the number of original articles and reviews originating from 11 Asian countries during the same period. One hundred journals, written in English or 7 non-English languages, were newly selected as infectious disease journals. The journals published 14,156 original articles and reviews of Asian origin and 118,158 throughout the world, more than those registered in the SCI Infectious Disease Category (4,621 of Asian origin and 66,518 of the world in the category). In Asian trend analysis of the 100 journals, Japan had the highest percentage of original articles and reviews in the area, and no noticeable increase in articles was revealed during the study period. China, India and Taiwan had relatively large numbers and a high increase rate of original articles among Asian countries. When adjusting the publication of original articles according to the country population and the gross domestic product (GDP), Singapore and Taiwan were the most productive. A survey of 100 selected journals is more sensitive than the SCI Infectious Disease Category from the viewpoint of avoiding underestimating the number of infectious disease research articles of Asian origin. The survey method is applicable to grasp global trends in disease research, although the method may require further development.

New journal selection for quantitative survey of infectious disease research: application for Asian trend analysis

Objective: To explore trends in mother–child healthcare (MCHC) research over the past 30 years. Methods: Classifications of Medline articles were made at 5-year intervals using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) as classifiers. Papers were classified in mutually and non-mutually exclusive categories by subject (mother and four age groups of children) and type of research (clinical, basic, epidemiologic, and unclassified) and its various combinations. Results: The number of MCHC papers increased from 34,110 in 1966 to 65,028 in 1995, but the proportion of all Medline articles (18–21%) was relatively stable. There were remarkable long-term temporal stabilities in the proportions of MCHC papers of mothers and the four age groups of children. Most papers dealt with child (46%) and adolescents (45%), and only 11% studied mother and children together. Regression analysis indicated that a linear increase in number of MCHC papers in Medline (1053/year) was represented largely by single-age and combinations of age children, especially adolescence. However, the slope for mother-plus-children papers (113/year) was substantially higher than for mothers alone (64/year). Clinical papers (52%) were the dominant type of MCHC research, but the proportions of basic and epidemiologic papers and their combinations with clinical papers have increased substantially in the past decade. Conclusions: There has been a dominance of clinical and child-related papers in MCHC research, which may be a reflection of restricted outlooks of specialists in the area. This may change soon if the tendency toward increasing numbers of basic and epidemiologic papers holds.

Research trends in mother-child healthcare, 1966-1995.

BACKGROUND: Reasons for the quantitative study of the Spanish publications on AIDS are both the huge volume attained by the printed material on the subject since the first case was described in 1981 by the Center for Disease Control, and the high incidence of the cases reported on this disease. METHODOLOGY: Searches have been performed on the subject through the database of the Indice Medico Espanol (IME), the Indice Espanol de Ciencia y Technologia (ICYT), the ISBN and Bibliografia Espanola in order to retrieve all possible Spanish journal papers' and books. The references were distributed using criteria of documentary tipology, publication date, institutions involved, autonomous communities, and, finally, after its relation with the confirmed cases of AIDS. RESULTS: A total 2,013 items have been retrieved, 1,821 journal papers' and 192 books. More than 50% of the papers are published only by five journals, being 139 the total number of journals able to carry pertinent information. The most productive journals were Medicina Clinica and Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiologia Clinica. CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm exponential growth of the publications from 1983, the first year when a paper was published on AIDS in Spain. The grow is similar to the tend observed in other countries. Parallelism has been detected between growth in the number of publications and in the number of journals publishing on the subject, the growth in the number of journals publishing on the subject, the growth in the number of institutions which collaborate and the growing tend of reported cases in Spain. The results of the bibliometric study, showing an epidemiological growth out of comparison in the history of the scientific literature, could be useful both to information scientists, and to the research inside this scientific field.
