How many genes does it take to make a fly
TL;DR: The largest contiguous stretch of DNA yet sequenced in Drosophila suggests that fruit-flies have only half as many genes as Caenorhabditis elegans.
Low-bias rna sequencing of the hiv-2 genome from blood plasma
K James,Thushan I de Silva,Katherine A. Brown,Hilton Whittle,Stephen Taylor,Gilean McVean,Joakim Esbjörnsson,Sarah Rowland-Jones +7 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrates that RNA-Seq is a feasible full-genome de novo sequencing method for blood plasma samples collected from HIV-2 infected individuals and generates a dynamic picture of genetic diversity over the whole genome of HIV- 2 in the context of low-bias sequencing.
Polymorphisms suggest mitochondrial recombination
TL;DR: The patterns of nucleotide polymorphism in human mitochondrial sequences rock the belief that mitochondria do not recombine as mentioned in this paper, which is contrary to the common belief that they do not do so.
An insight into the genetic variation of Schistosoma japonicum in mainland China using DNA microsatellite markers.
Jaya Shrivastava,Bao Zhen Qian,Bao Zhen Qian,Gilean McVean,Joanne P. Webster,Joanne P. Webster +5 more
TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the level of genetic variation among Schistosoma japonicum from different geographical origins and found that high levels of polymorphism were obtained between and within population samples, with Chinese and Philippine strains appearing to follow different lineages.
