This report describes the approaches necessary for the measurement, monitoring and reporting of structure, biomass and carbon stocks in mangrove forests. Mangroves are coastal ecosystems providing numerous ecosystem services affecting both marine and terrestrial resources. In addition, they contain substantial carbon stocks and, due to high rates of deforestation, are significant sources of carbon emissions. Because of their value as carbon stocks and sinks and their numerous other benefits, mangroves could be excellent candidates for carbon mitigation programmes including Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and Enhancing Forest Carbon Stocks in Developing Countries (REDD+). This publication outlines biologically relevant and statistically valid approaches to the efficient and accurate assessment of ecosystem structure, biomass and carbon stocks of mangrove forests.

Coastal marine ecosystems of Latin America.

The objectives of this study were to determine responses by red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and its primary consumers to nutrient enrichment, to determine if nutrient limitation is responsible for the dwarf plant form of red mangrove, and to evaluate four competing hypotheses for the relation of nutrient status and invertebrate herbivory. In a factorial-designed experiment, I fertilized 48 dwarf trees along gradients of tidal elevation and water depth at Twin Cays, an intertidal mangrove island in Belize, Central America, and measured plant growth responses and herbivory for 2 yr. At the end of year- 2, I compared biomass accumulation and analyzed plant tissue for chemical and structural composition. Dwarf red mangrove trees on this tidal island responded quickly and grew vigorously when treated with P and NPK fertilizers. Leaf number, leaf area, branching, shoot length, and aerial root production increased dramatically over 2 yr. N-fertilized trees grew very slowly and their responses were not different from Control trees. N-fertilized and Control trees changed little over 2 yr. Some responses to phosphorus-containing fer- tilizers vary by water depth and tidal elevation, but physicochemical factors do not explain the differences in growth responses. I conclude that phosphorus availability is a major factor limiting red mangrove growth at my study site in the interior of Twin Cays. Herbivory by two specialized, endophytic insect species (Ecdytolopha sp., which feeds in apical buds, and Marmara sp., which mines stem periderm) increased in P- and NPK-fertilized trees compared to N-fertilized and Control trees. Twice as many apical buds were damaged or destroyed and the frequency of mines increased by 6-8 fold. However, fertilization had no effect on feeding rates and standing damage by a leaf-feeding guild of generalist herbivores or on the frequency of shoots killed by stem borers. Herbivory by the two specialists was not related to C:N ratios, but it was inversely related to concentrations of phenolic com- pounds. Neither nutrient ratios nor concentrations of phenolics affected rates of herbivory by the generalist folivores. Although sclerophylly of red mangrove leaves decreased in P- and NPK-fertilized trees but not in N-fertilized and Control trees, there was no relationship between leaf toughness and herbivory by generalist folivores. These data suggest that sclerophylly in oligotrophic ecosystems may be an adaptive mechanism related to nutrient conservation, and that it is associated with red mangrove survival in phosphorus-deficient soil rather than an adaptation to herbivory.

The article presents new results on the structure and the above-ground biomass of the various population types of mangroves in French Guiana. Nine mangrove stands were studied, each composed of three to ten adjoining plots with areas that varied depending on the density of the populations. Structural parameters and indices were calculated. Individuals representative of the three groups of taxa present were felled:Avicennia germinans (L) Stearn, Rhizophora spp., and Laguncularia racemosa (L) Gaertn. The trunks, branches and leaves were sorted and weighed separately. The biomass was obtained by determining the allometric relationships, the general equation selected being of the type y = aoxa1, where the diameter (x) is the predictive variable. The total above-ground biomass varied from 31 t ha−1 for the pioneer stages to 315 t ha−1 for mature coastal mangroves, but with large variations depending on the structural characteristics at each site. The results place the Guianese mangroves among those with high biomass, although lower than those reported for Asia. Based on the relationships between structural parameters and standing biomass, in particular with the use of the “self-thinning rule”, population dynamics models are proposed.

Aim

We developed a set of statistical models to improve spatial estimates of mangrove aboveground biomass (AGB) based on the environmental signature hypothesis (ESH). We hypothesized that higher tidal amplitudes, river discharge, temperature, direct rainfall and decreased potential evapotranspiration explain observed high mangrove AGB.



Location

Neotropics and a small portion of the Nearctic region.



Methods

A universal forest model based on site-level forest structure statistics was validated to spatially interpolate estimates of mangrove biomass at different locations. Linear models were then used to predict mangrove AGB across the Neotropics.



Results

The universal forest site-level model was effective in estimating mangrove AGB using pre-existing mangrove forest structure inventories to validate the model. We confirmed our hypothesis that at continental scales higher tidal amplitudes contributed to high forest biomass associated with high temperature and rainfall, and low potential evapotranspiration. Our model explained 20% of the spatial variability in mangrove AGB, with values ranging from 16.6 to 627.0 t ha−1 (mean, 88.7 t ha−1). Our findings show that mangrove AGB has been overestimated by 25–50% in the Neotropics, underscoring a commensurate bias in current published global estimates using site-level information.



Main conclusions

Our analysis show how the ESH significantly explains spatial variability in mangrove AGB at hemispheric scales. This finding is critical to improve and explain site-level estimates of mangrove AGB that are currently used to determine the relative contribution of mangrove wetlands to global carbon budgets. Due to the lack of a conceptual framework explicitly linking environmental drivers and mangrove AGB values during model validation, previous works have significantly overestimated mangrove AGB; our novel approach improved these assessments. In addition, our framework can potentially be applied to other forest-dominated ecosystems by allowing the retrieval of extensive databases at local levels to generate more robust statistical predictive models to estimate continental-scale biomass values.

Scaling mangrove aboveground biomass from site‐level to continental‐scale

In this work it was hypothesized that secondary succession on sites that have been managed by single planting of mangrove species is compromised by residual stressors, which could reduce the ecosystem’s structural development and lower its functions. Forest structure and environmental characteristics of three planted mangrove stands are compared with reference sites. Structural attributes showed significant differences in the comparison of planted and reference stands. Avicennia schaueriana was the dominant species within both natural regeneration and old-growth stands in terms of basal area (99.2 and 99.4 %, 69.6 and 84.5 %, and 59.0 and 87.1 % for Itacorubi, Saco Grande, and Ratones, respectively). Restoration stands were dominated by Laguncularia racemosa (80.6 and 94.2 % for Saco Grande and Ratones, respectively), except at one site (Itacorubi), where A. schaueriana prevailed (99.7 %). Even though restoration and regeneration stands at Itacorubi showed similar species composition and dominance, cohort sorting revealed an inferior regeneration potential in the restoration stand. Multiple correlation analysis indicated that variables related to elevation disruptions (p

  = 0.521) were the environmental drivers responsible for the differences observed in forest structure. At restoration sites an impaired pattern of secondary succession was observed, indicating that single species plantings may be ineffective if characteristics of the site, as well as of the area surrounding it, are not considered. The inadequate management of restoration sites can therefore have implications for both immediate and long-term large-scale ecosystem services.
